Front End Rebuild
The front end on my '84 300D-T is about shot. The shop wants $1700 for a complete rebuild. Is this too much? Can I do it myself? I'm reasonably competent at the DIY stuff; changed the center support bearing; adjusted valves; adjusted turbo wastegate, etc...so I know how to turn a wrench.
Suggestions?

That sounds kind of high...I need the same thing done to my 79 300 SD, and I was told around $1,000-1,200. Still a lot of $$, but several hundred less! I'd get another estimate.

I just did lower ball joints, outer tie rods, center rod, steering damper, track rod joints, bearing housing bushings, new rotors, brake pads, wheel bearings repacked with new seals, and new tires,I took my time as car( 86 500 SE is not my daily) driver but was fun and will do other bushings later.I would recomend that you have balljoints pressed out and in at shop I did it myself and was hardest part of job, also track rod joint and bearing houseing bushings have to be pressed in and out but they are easy with cheap little bottle jack press......

It is a diyer job and based on what you have accomplished you should be able to do it without alot of trouble. Make sure you either pay a MB independent to press the new lower ball joints in or rent the tool from Performance. Alot of the disassembly takes brute force but it is pretty straight forward.

Thanks to all for replying. I think I will attempt this myself...now I wonder what the parts will cost.

call Fastlane you will be suprised at how inexpensive the parts are, all the parts I got were the highest quality and cost was about half of what a friend paid for parts to do Volvo front end. Would definately buy the whole tie rods and not the replacement ends and you will need a tie rod seperator I used a simple fork type ($12.00)and it worked fine......make double sure that your car is safely supported when doing this job........
