dashboard idle adjust knob not right?
The idle adjust knob on the dash wasn't working. Turns out the plug on the end of the cable was missing, so the cable was not connected to the system at the injection pump end. I pulled the plug off the parts car, put it on the end of the cable and now the throttle is sticky when I'm driving.
The knob now does adjust the idle, but now when I take my foot off the gas the engine rpms stay high for a while. It looks as if the linkage should be totally unaffected by that cable and knob, but obviously I've missed something!

What year and model?
I don't see why that cable would make the throttle stick. Go over all the other linkages and ball sockets cleaning them and lubricating all friction points with automatic transmission fluid. Good luck!!!

Make sure the barrel nut isn't touching anything when the idle speed knob is turned fully clockwise and the foot feed isn't touched ~ you may have simply installed it 4MM or so too close .

It's the '83 240D in my signature. This weekend I hope to get my son to mess with the pedal and the knob, while I watch under the dash. So far it's only happened while I was driving.
I'll try lubing everything, Sugar Bear. No downside to that! Nate, I did put the nut on so that it wasn't quite touching anything with the engine stopped. Is that how it should be?

Yes .
There may simply be some small thing amiss . Take your time and read older messages, there's a lot of 240D info in here .

My 240D had a horizontal rod on the firewall as part of the accelerator linkage. That rod bound up in its mounting bushings.
Good luck!!!

There is an enormous set screw on the barrel nut, and occasionally that would twist around and bind on the linkage. I'll replace that with a small hex screw for a long term fix.
