300SD homokinetic cv axle interchangeability
A few months ago, I decided to proactively change my original cv axles on my W126 1981 300SD because the boots were cracking but weren't leaking. CVJ didn't have any in stock, but 2 different rebuilders in California did, one from J&J and one on Ebay so I bought one from each rebuilder. When I tried to install one from J&J, it wouldn't fit no matter what. The axle from Ebay went in with no trouble. After taking some measurements of the J&J axle and the original while both were compressed fully, I discovered the J&J axle is 1/2 inch too long. I've been in contact with J&J, and they've offered to send a return label and send a replacement once they receive mine. They sent photos of the replacement, and the only problem is the replacement appears to be the one used on the W126 280S/SE/SEL. It has the 4 ribs on the shaft like the one for the SD per the FSM, but it has a smaller can on the inside. I asked J&J about it and I'm waiting to hear back. I was told by a MB restorer that the axle shafts used on the 280 S/SE/SEL and the 300SD are the same so it should be ok length wise, but the only difference is the inside can and that it'll still fit. The 280S/SE/SEL inner can has a diameter of 100 mm vs the 300SD's inner can diameter of 115 mm. If it'll fit physically and has the same shafts, is there a reason to not use the smaller can axle on the 300SD? I've attached a screenshot of the FSM and the photo of the axle at the inner can.

It will be a weaker design, but we’ll above the capabilities of the diesel motor.
I probably have a few original 126axles sitting around. Lemme know if you need any measurements.
