OM617 Oil filter housing is off, anything else I should do before reinstalling it?
I had a leak in the usual place between the oil filter housing and the block. I have the proper waffle textured OE gasket for a replacement. The gasket I pulled off looked to be in good shape. But, it was a paper gasket. That's probably why it was leaking. I didn't see any leak around the other gasket (triangle shaped piece) While I have the whole housing off and cleaned, is there any reason whatsoever that I should replace that triangle gasket? Since getting these off and back on again is such a pain, is there anything else I should do before reinstalling the whole housing?

I too had a not very fun time replacing this gasket, some years later it began to leak again and some kind person here suggested maybe I should simply try snugging up the 6MM allen screws, bingo . Apparently I was asleep at the switch when I re assembled it . On the other hand, now that you have the car safely up and blocked, no better time to hand wash the entire chassis , engine, tranny and so on.... I looked like a joke when I was done but the car is still nice long after . I dislike oily / greasy vehicles .

You can put the Oil Filter Housing on and if it turns out that the triangle shaped piece leaks it can be changed while it is on the Engine.
CRC (and likely other companies) makes a gasket remover. No. 05021 Works great on aluminum to keep you from gouging the aluminum and of course it will work well on the iron block.

Add a low pressure alarm/light to compliment the gauge......unless you religiously look at the gauge all the time, it will not grab your attention when it silently swings to zero after blowing an oil cooler hose or worse. I found some parts that will fit into the stock oil pressure fitting on the oil filter canister that will allow you to keep the stock gauge but also allow you to add a standard oil pressure switch to power a light/buzzer. Parts can be found here

Well guys, I finished the job last night. I didn't have any of the nightmare situations with too tight fittings or anything like that. I've driven the car though the canyon a few times and checked for leaks. All clear, no leaks!!! The triangle gasket is not leaking either. Those cooling lines are the biggest pain. But, if you loosen the two clamps between oil filter housing and the oil cooler at the radiator, you can move the oil cooler lines around just enough to do what is needed. If you need new oil cooler lines, this would be a good time to do that too. Mine were excellent.

Well, so much then for installing an oil pressure alarm. Glad it is leak free for you!

Where did you find the waffle gasket?

If so, is this thing buzzing every time you turn your car on or off or come off a highway ramp? Or do you have it set at .5 bar or something?

Hi Shern,
No in all honestly, I have not done it yet, I am in the process of gathering the parts together. I was just throwing it out there since the OP already had the housing off, thinking it might make the job easier if he was interested in doing the mod. I'm actually thinking of doing a bright LED light instead of a buzzer, that way it will not buzz during the glow cycle, just another light on the dash until pressure builds up. Probably use one of the empty slots in the dash for a cleaner install. As for the pressure setting , I'm looking at the various pressures that are offered by the generic pressure switches you can get. Probably get something in the .5 to 1 bar range. Gonna be a winter project if you know what I mean. Diesel911 did a write up on hooking one up by drilling and threading a hole in the lid of the oil filter canister a while back......good read.

I like the idea of doing the oil pressure alarm and I might do it someday.

LED is a cool idea.
I suppose the thing about blowing a line is that you probably have only a few seconds to cut the engine and (safely?) pull over. Whether it's a light or a buzzer, the time it may take to recognize a novel sound or light over highway noise, music, conversation, could really cut into that time. In the end, I'll likely opt for a good set of rebuilt oil lines and hope for the best. Quote:

I ordered the waffle gasket from a "source" in WA state. I find that if I name the "source" in this forum, the algorithm will block the message from being posted.
