Sourcing W124 Muffler

The muffler on my 91 300D is basically intact but one of the tail pipes is about to come off. I'm going to try some exhaust wrap to keep it in place...but I know I'll need a new muffler soon enough.

The part is 1244919201. I know I can get it from a dealer for about $550. Last time I bought one of these (for another W124), it was a brand that started with an E (some long German name....Eberspacher?) that was considerably less. The other possibility is for my exhaust shop just to install a generic muffler (about $200) but I'd like to stay with OE if possible.

Open to any suggestions.

A related question: how big of a deal is it to be missing a tailpipe? Could exhaust gases really find their way into the cabin? Seems pretty low risk...especially if the car is moving.

Here is what come to mind:
OE,
Eberspacher,
Ansa,
Borla, or
excellent used from a rust free region.

Good luck!!!

Don't know what it meant by 'intact' and 'coming off'. Just go to an exhaust shop to weld whatever is coming off to coming back on. Diesel exhaust lasts for a long time if no rust. Also diesel car has no carbon monoxide so any leak will not kill.

Last I had the same problem I checked ebay and there were quite a few new and used options available.

In the end I just had a muffler shop repair it, it had a few holes in the shell that they patched up.

If its just the downturned muffler tips sounds like an easy fix at the muffler shop.

Except that it is from a diesel I cannot remember if his is a W123 muffler or not (a ForcedInduction pic). Nothing special about the muffler. Mainly just an expansion chamber.

without the tailpipe you can get exhaust being pulled into the cabin while moving.

Any exhaust shop can remake the tailpipe, my W124 suffered an accident on the tailpipe too, Exhaust shop cut it and fabbed one that looked better than factory. I recall the guy also weld gussets on both in and out pipes so it didnt suffer the same fracture.

Mine rusted out and I had it replaced with a magnaflow designed for a turbo. I think the total was just under $300. Perfectly quiet but it has a nice growl when I put my foot in it.

I will need to replace the muffler. I can get MB for $500. Or will need to find a Magnaflow or something.

The exhaust shop I've always used tells me I need to source the muffler on my own and they will install. Maybe I need to find a new exhaust shop.
