CCU (climate control unit) removal

Hi,

I have a 1986 190D 2.5L non turbo.

I am chasing an HVAC issue and think I have got it down to a faulty Climate Control Unit.

Does anyone know how to remove this unit?
I can't find anything online or on this website for a W201 190D.

I would like to pull it out and test it.

Thanks for any help.

This is from memory but it should be ok. Remove ash tray, remove radio. Remove center center vent. There should be 2 screws, remove. Remove 2 screws on either side holding the center console then the console should come out. The rest should be obvious. Good luck.

Good to know. I was going to try to remove the wood grain because I thought screws were underneath there.

I suspect I have a problem with my CCU. If I do, I hope it will be obvious, like a dirty connector or a broken solder joint.

I got the ashtray out but it looks like I will have to remove the surrounding black trim padded piece to access the ccu screws and remove it.

I can not figure out how to get that surrounding piece off.

That is the thing with the W201 Mercedes cars. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information out there on them.

Any idea?

What is your CCU issue?
On my W123, re-soldering all the connections in the push button unit (as was suggested here) fixed my weird climate control issues.
Your W201 unit looks very similar to a W123 unit, so they may suffer the same failure.

I am sure 1986 and 1984 year is the same. Did you remove the whole console holding the radio, CCU, ashtray? It is held by the 4 screws in previous post. You need to remove it, put it on the shelf and push everything from the back.

Thanks.
I Finally figured it out. There were 2 phillips screws in the ashtray area that I didn't see until I really got in there and looked. Once out I was able to pull out the console.

My climate control unit is in default mode. Heat is coming out of the defroster and side vents. I took the CCU out and cleaned all of the electrical connections.

I also looked over the plastic hoses and their rubber connectors behind the CCU and at the vacuum bank behind the glove box. I was hoping I would see something that was obvious but I didn't.

I put everything back together and I am still having the same issue.

I also can not find any vacuum leaks.

I am going to replace the heater valve under the front cowl. It holds vacuum but I read that it still may be bad.

If the replacement heater valve doesn't fix it, I was thinking of just adding a valve under the hood that will allow me to turn off the hot water going into the heater core. Turn it on in the winter and turn it off in the summer.

Did you post that there is no vacuum to the heater valve line when the CCU call for AC? If it is the case then changing the valve would fix nothing.

Did you check the relay bank by putting 12v to each valve to see whether it is closing or activating the valves? I suspect the problem is the CCU. Blocking the water flow is one way of fixing it.
