1985 California Exhaust Trap Oxidizer Braces
Long story short....I had my 1985 300 CD California Edition engine replaced. I am running the trap oxidizer bypass pipe since the EGR computer is kaput. During the engine install the shop neglected to replace the three trap oxidizer braces/brackets. Before I have to go out and rummage through a pick-n-pull to replace these braces, I am wondering if I even need them. Has anybody else run without the braces for a considerable distance?

Not needed without the trap weight.

You Need the braces
I replaced the trap oxidizer on my 85-w123 calif model. I did not lock tight the nuts that held the braces in place. The nuts vibrated off and the weight of the Turbo was enough to break the oil drain line from the turbo, Dumped and entire crankcase of oil.
The fix for me was to have the two pipe pieces silver soldered back together, and to replace the nuts I had lost, using locktite and jam nuts where possible. Now I check them every month or so, Hammerwerfer

This reminds me of a frequent poster here from 10-15 years or so ago who routintely gave the following advice (I'm paraphrasing): Every month, get under your old M-B diesel with a bringht light and a couple of paper towels. Check for leaks, things coming loose, damage, failed items, etc. Sage advice that I have followed for many, many years and that has paid off more than a few times. |
