MTC Air Filter Bracket 3031

So everybody knows that this is one of the parts that MB has discontinued. https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/6170900340.htm?pn=617-090-03-40-MBZ

MTC seems to be the only newly made option and since the shipping problems started these have been hard to get as well. I bought one from Amazon thinking I was lucky to get it. Until I went to install it.

Others like Kent at MS and anonymous online reviews have commented that these can have problems with lining up to mounting holes. I hoped I would get lucky. The pictures show the problem. The lower bracket is slightly off angle and that translates into a big miss up top. My template is cardboard but the results are exactly what it looked like on my car with the lower bolt in place. There is no way to make this one work in my opinion. Maybe others are better.

In one of the threads it has that they break again easier then the originals. To that end there was an other thread were someone reinforced the replacement.

Neither a new AF Bracket nor even new motor mounts get long service if the issues that are causing the engine shaking is are not fixed.

I ended up drilling out the spot welds to separate the two pieces, then drilled larger through holes after lining it up properly and bolted it back together. It was a huge PITA and still only fits mediocre at best. Wish I had better news for you.
Sorry, I didn't take any pictures because I was pretty disgusted with the whole deal. It has been on there for a couple years without failing however.

I called MTC in California today and spoke with an Indian guy and asked if he was aware of the problems being had with this part. He told me he would let them know in India but that he had no way of checking his stock because he doesn't have an original to compare his with.

When my original broke I heard it fall into the road. Not knowing what it was I parked and went to look and unfortunately the piece had already been run over and somewhat flattened. It needs to be reshaped before welding but that is what I will do if necessary.

Anybody near Sacramento, CA needing an air cleaner bracket check my craigslist below. Been trying to sell a Meyle and a M-B one for 6 months. Both my 300D's now have the 1985 CA frame-mounted air cleaner. Many other parts for a 1982-85 300D so might be worth the drive from San Francisco if you need them, or easy stop-by on your next ski trip.

I spoke with Laser Tools about why their Delivery Valve Socket did not fit (within a few months they corrected the issues and sent me some new made sockets that fit) I had asked they why they simply did not copy the dimensions of the Hazet Delivery Valve Socket.

It is the same with the Air Filter Bracket. In order to get the holes correct all they had to do was buy a real Mercedes one and simply copy where the holes were and so on.

Yeah I went through this headache a couple of years ago on my SD. To add insult to injury the bracket broke after a year. I used M6 bolts to put it back together.

Hopefully it’ll last since I smoothed out my idle significantly.

That is certainly a major factor to the cause of the issue.

I remember in the first few years of being on this forum of reports of new Air Filter Mounts from Mercedes breaking after a year or so of use. If you don't get the Engine shaking issues tamed the best Air Filter Mount can break and the life of the best quality Motor and Transmission mounts gest shortened.

Often vice-versa. Better motor mounts can greatly reduce the engine shaking. The Made in India mounts (DEA, Anchor, ...) caused my engines to shake more and also sagged within a few years. I got the better "correct" parts (Made in Turkey?) with identifying marks (search posts) and much less shaking, plus they last longer. I got so frustrated that I tried fluid-damped mounts for a Corvette (a bit tough to fit), but shaked so bad with those that I took them out after 2 days. Not sure they weren't actually solid rubber (cheap after-market). I also switched to "renewable diesel" which idles much smoother, but available only in CA.

For those in CA, consider installing a junkyard 1985 CA frame-mounted air filter housing as I did in my 1984 300D. Cut the outlet duct 1.5" shorter to match the lower turbo inlet and use a silicone elbow. Don't fret the expensive air filter as stacking 2 common Wix filters works. Search for my post with details.

Motor Mount info on a 84 300D. The from Mercedes Motor Mounts are made in Turkey apparelty by Phoenix and have the Mercedes Star, Part Number and the Phoenix logo as well as the colored Dots on them.

The Lemforder Motor Mounts are the same as above but have the Mercedes Star sanded/ground off. I have no priced them lately but he Lemforders used to be 1/3 the cost of the same item from Mercedes.

When I originally got my Car I installed URO Motor Mounts and they lasted 5 years before collapsing; replaced with Lemforder mounts. I replaced them when I was correcting the hot idle shaking issues. If you don't correct the shaking issues your mounts are not going to last as long.
