Stacking shifts without vacuum?
84 300D 406k transmission
Now I have a problem that I can't figure out from all the reading I've done here about my transmission in Drive when I leave a stop it shifts right away into the next gear instead of holding that gear before shifting to the next one. Keep in mind that I have eliminated the Vacuum problems all together as I have disconnected the vacuum to the Modulator. Yes it shifts hard now but this is just for a test and I'd expect it to hold at least till 2000RPM at full throttle this way but it doesn't even hardly get to 1200rpm. I have been manually shifting when I need extra power because the kickdown does not work either even though I am getting power at the solonoid when the petal is too the floor. The Solonoid may be bad keeping it from kicking down but don't think that will stack the shifts. It acts like some kind of problem within the Transmission like a governor or something. When I connect the Vacuum it does the same thing just much smoother. Has anyone ever heard of this problem? Thanks so much in advance. I'm thinking it's time to get the tranny rebuilt |

Your 84 probably has a bowden cable, correct?
If that cable is improperly routed on the valve cover, or has too much slack, the shifting will be way off. Check that first before getting a rebuild. |

. No matter how much I back it out it doesn't make a noticable difference in shifting

Once I did a valve adjustment, then when I put it all together I improperly routed the bowden cable so it wasn't being moved by the throttle position. The result was very early rapid shifts, similar to what you describe. |

I would go back to the beginning. Make sure that your bowden cable is connected and not broken. That is the normal adjustment to control shift points. At the same time and before you do anything else, check your pressure at the modulator. I have a 722.303 and a 722.315 transmissions. Both have the green modulator. Trans specs that I've seen in various manuals have similar pressure settings for a given color of modulator.
Once you know that the bowden and modulator are working, test your vacuum and the VCV. The VCV adjustment calls for use of a spacer disk. I made my own by drilling a 1/8" hole in a nickle. You could get fancy and use super glue to make a thicker disk by gluing 2 nickles together. Report back what you have after you've gotten to a known good starting point. There are transmission manuals available with the step by step factory procedures. Use those instead of the forum wanderings.
