'78 240D Driveshaft(Manual Transmission)

I continue to search for an answer to my question in the database but have been unsuccessful thus far. Does anyone know the correct part number for the 2-piece shaft for a manual transmission? I can't find a part number listed on my original but it does have one green and one red color band.

According to the Polish website the part numbers are as follows:
Ref. Cat Car Info site for 123.123, propellor shaft, 2-piece shaft(figure 8)
1234104106 Version LM...(presumably the manual tranny)
1234104206 Version LA...(" " auto tranny)

Mercedes doesn't seem to recognize the part number for the manual(-4106). The auto transmission shaft (-4206) is available from an online MB orginal parts dealer for $300. If that's an entirely new shaft pre-assmembled, that's a great deal in my book but that's assuming I can find the correct shaft.

Re: attached image, figure 8 from the site referenced
If I order that part number would I receive the part as pictured i.e. both halves, intermediate bearing assembly installed, centering bushings, and flex discs?

Or do I just get the front and rear shafts minus all the replaceable parts?

The reason I ask is because in rebuilding my shaft I realized the u-joint is pinned and the only way to replace it is to replace the entire shaft BUT if the part number I listed is complete then replacing the entire thing may be a better investment. I realize I could take it to a shop and probably have them install a new u-joint in my shaft but I can't imagine that would be any less than $200 then I still need to replace the rest of the parts, tear down, and rebuild.

Give them the vin and any other info they want and let the Mercedes Parts Place decide which drive shaft is correct for your vehicle.

I replace the staked in U-joint on mine without having it rebalanced over 10 years ago. There are 2 threads on doing that.
Unfortunately, there is no special tools for doing that.

In the past apparently there were some places that would not only replace the joint but put one on that had a grease zert and re-balance it but places that do they seem to have passed by the way side.

From 02-11-2011
Here is my thread on that: Drive Shaft U-Joint Is Staked/Crimped In Place, Now What To Do?

What is really needed for this job is something called a burnishing tool. A burnisning tool has at least 3 hardened steel rollers (I have only seen pictures of it in an Engine Manual) as you rotate the tool the rollers expand outwards and compress the metal on and inside diameter.

You would knock the Bearing Cap inwards past the crimp, insert the burnishing tool and compress the staked areas back so that the bore is restored. Since meta is not removed the balance should be retained.

Another method could be to cut out the U-joint and use a hardened rod made for the job as a mandrel to press through the bearing bore from the inside to the outside and again compress the staking. If it just happened that a Ball Bearing was the size needed instead of the hardened rod the Ball Bearing could be used.

Diesel911,
Thank you for that. I’ll chase down those threads. If i can do it for less than the cost of new, that works for me. I appreciate kate the reply.
