Injector knock, or?
Around 800 miles ago, I completely ran out of fuel. Filled it back up, it ran fine, no injector noise.
Last Saturday Tom Sweeney and I replaced my timing chain and tensioner and immidiately after starting it with the new chain I notice some rather loud injector knock OR lifter noise, they sound very similar. BTW, Tom pointed out that my existing chain had over 12 degrees of stretch!! Thinking that a particle of sludge got past the filters and clogged one of the injectors, the next day I replaced the 2 fuel flters, put a bottle of Red Line diesel catalyst in and drove it. 310 miles later, I still have injector knock. Though not as severe, I still hear it even when driving. The inline filter was completely filthy with sludge, I didn't inspect the spin on type. What should I do from here, its driving me crazy. It sounds like im driving a car with a bad engine, like the regular diesel sound isn't loud enough already, now it sounds like I'm about to throw a rod. |

John, congrats. on success with rolling in new chain. I wish I could have made it out to watch. Did you check the timing? Injector knock can either be poor spray because of dirt or inaccurately timed spray. Good luck.

You need to reset the timing -- someone has set it with a stretched chain.
Also, you may have had very late timing with that much chain stretch, and only now are hearing "normal" diesel noise. MB engines are definitely diesels, and sound like them. Usually don't hear much knock at speed, though. Also, make sure you tensioner is working -- chain slap can sound like injector knock, too! Peter

Ok, I'm afraid to ask this, but how would a guy like me go about setting the injection pump timing? I know it involves loosening the IP and tilting it, right?

Ha ha! On the 603 you have to remove the vacuum pump -- the bolts for the IP run through the chain case. There is a little bolt sticking up on the outside of the front of the IP that is used to rotate it.
More than that, I cannot help, as I've not had to do this myself. The procedure is somewhat different that the older diesels, though, and the timing is different, too. There is at lest one other person on the forum who has adjusted his, so you will get better answers soon, I'm sure. Peter
