what is a reasonable charge in the Atlanta area for a timing chain and tensioner replacement on a 87 300D? Any recommendations for good quality work?

I would suggest taking it to MB Autowerks to have this work done. Call them and see if they can give you an estimate for this job.

Why are you changing it? Isn't this one of the engines with the ratcheting tensioner?

Have a great day,

When I lived in Atlanta, I used Austrian Motors on Northside and 14th Street. I always had a good experience with them.

I dont know his mileage, but at 272K mine had 12+ degrees of stretch. It has a hydraulic piston type tensioner.

HOLY COW !!!! 12 DEGREES???

I am surprised it runs! I don't think the tensioner is even touching the chain!

Yeah, I felt the same way. I am relieved that a new one is in there now.
