w123 brake pins length

I have a 1983 240d and the paseenger front brake caliper was leaking fluid so I swapped it out today with a spare I pulled off another w123. The spare didn't have the pins that slide through the pads so I used the ones from the leaking caliper.

The problem is that the pins aren't long enough to attach the safety clip. Are there different length pins or does this caliper require the pins that have the little tension thing on it?

These look like the pins with the spring/tension thing.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Pete

Are you trying to use ATE parts on a Bendix caliper? ATE is what the image from the Pelican catalog shows. Bendix uses the same pads but different hardware. Bendix pins have a hole for a cotter key.

That could be the problem. Is ATE or Bendix stamped anywhere on the caliper?
I'll take a look at the caliper and see if I can find any info.

Thanks,

pete

The pins aren't the only thing that is different between ATE, Bendix and Girling calipers. Once you identify which brand you are dealing with, buying a brake caliper hardware kit for the appropriate brand should get you back in good shape.

The ATE's on mine on the casting opposite the side of the piston bore has a logo squeezed into kind of a triangular shape ATE with the A tallest and the other letter sloping downwards, and it is not large. However, people usually identify them by their brake hardware parts.

Post Swapping Used Brake Calipers

It's very poor practice to use different types of brake calipers on either side .

I have no beef with installing used non leaking / weepy brake calipers but they really should match .

*most* ATE branded ones have "ATE" in raised casted script but it's sometimes almost gone from multiple rebuilding and some Chinese calipers are bare of any markings .

I foolishly neglected to make note of where you're located, I have some used W123 calipers for rebuilding, I'd give them away, Pelican parts doesn't seem to want them even though they made me wait THREE MONTHS for front wagon calipers due to lack of cores....

If you're using used hydraulic brake parts BE SURE to fully bleed all four wheels until you get clean fluid out the bleeder nipples .

Your life depends on this .

Actually, the W123 FSM says that mismatched caliper brands are perfectly acceptable provided that the piston diameter matches.
