1993 w140 300sd (300??) Isn't a 93 the rod bender 3.5 liter?

My son bought one of these and I notice on the title that it says 300SD. Isn't a 1993 a 350SD (3.5l rod bender engine)?

I believe the 3.5 started in the W126 body style and continued into the W140. So yes. I’ve read that I’d the motors make it past some point they are likely fine if not abused. I don’t know.

Yes, I own one. They relabeled it as 300SD to capitalize on a long familiar model (they went back to 350 a few years later because of course one should slays determine the status and worthiness of a vehicle by how big the number is on it)... It has the OM603.971 “rod bender”.

My 93 has a factory replacement engine. Runs great. Some were some weren’t ok. Some original engines out there which, if the rods didn’t bend by say 120k, are probably good forever.

What isn’t good forever is the head gasket. The block and heads are different materials, and expand and contract at different rates. Most 3.5 engines I’ve looked at have signs of HG failure. Or a replaced engine likely due to same. The HG is also a likely culprit for causing rod bending imo.

What history and documents came with the car? Pull the radiator cap, any signs of oil in the bottle? It’s black colored in the top (bad idea), so hard to see. But signs of oil in there is a good starting point.

My son wanted a rod bender for some reason. So I guess he'll be happy to know it's the 3.5 L. It doesn't run yet, but we hope it'll be ok. We'll see in a bit. Battery charging right now.

Before you run it open the rad cap and peek in.

Be ready for tensioner parts.

Have you changed all fluids and filters?

Rod bender is a nice engine if you know the weakness, pay accordingly, and plan for repairs.

I checked all fluids before purchase and all looked and smelled fine (trans, oil, coolant). Nothing burnt, no mixing of fluids, etc. I was glad to see this. And he got it at a price where with a little work, he should be able to get his money back if it doesn't run or becomes something that would cost too much to get back on the road. If it does run and ends up becoming a rod bender, he can count himself fortunate to have had some inexpensive drive time on the car.
