Propel Fuel instead of my regular diesel fuel?
I've got a 1983 300D, and I've always put regular diesel fuel in it.
Now, I've moved and the station on the corner sells Propel High Performance Fuel, called Diesel HPR. If I switch over to this, or switch back and forth, is it a good idea? bad?...It is a bit cheaper than regular diesel fuel now. I've read some good, some bad things. My mechanic is very old school so I think I know what he's say, but wondering if anyone out there has switched over to this and what you think... Thanks much |

Quote:
What is HPR diesel? Diesel HPR is a premium fuel engineered to maximize clean diesel engine performance. Diesel HPR meets the ASTM D975 diesel specification (ULSD) for use in all diesel engines. Refined from recycled fats & oils, Diesel HPR outperforms both petroleum diesel and biodiesel in performance, emissions and value.

It just says premium fuel...It says No biodiesel. It's the alternative fuel for
diesels, I don't know what it's all made of, but it is not your normal diesel fuel. I think it's made with oils, etc. I'm not sure. |

Is their an advertised cetane rating?

No the booklet just says "With higher Cetane and enhanced lubricity, etc.
I'll just call them on Monday to make sure it's ok to use. Says it "outperforms both petroleum diesel and biodiesel in performance emissions and value" |

Please ask the cetane # and post if you contact them.

cetane of 75
HPR is a bio-fuel and is supposed to have a cetane rating of 75 and burn cleaner than diesel
I have used it for several years in my start/stop tank without any problems. Other members here also use HPR and there have been no complaints that I'm aware of. I would recommend you try it. This link explains the difference between biodiesel and HPR https://www.motortrend.com/news/1503-propel-fuels-renewable-high-performance-diesel-northern-california/ Jeff

That Motortrend article says nothing about what HPR really is or what processes are used to produce the HPR or the feedstocks for it. I found some other links if you're interested in slightly more info.
Old slides circa 2016 from some .gov site: https://cleancities.energy.gov/files/u/news_events/document/document_url/182/McCormick___Alleman_RD_Overview_2016_07_18.pdf Neste (HPR manufacturer) site regarding feedstocks and catalysts for the fuel. - This is what I wanted to know about. https://www.neste.com/about-neste/innovation/our-approach

I've used it since they first began selling it, and in Sacramento where Propel is headquartered, so perhaps their first stations. Works in any diesel engine. Mine idle noticeably quieter and smoother on it, confirming "fuel matters". I've bought it even when 10c/gal more than the cheaper fossil D2 stations. Union76 also sells "renewable diesel". Only available in California, due to carbon-credits market.
I researched a few years ago. Propel sourced it from Neste, a Euro company, who I think ran the plant. They used seafood waste from Singapore processing plants. Might have changed. Several years ago, I filled up at Union76 and noticed the diesel pumps had "R99" labels, stating bio-based. The attendant didn't know about it. Later, they began putting roadside banners at CA stations "Renewable Diesel". None of these are like the old home-made veg oil bio. They chemically process it so it won't gel in cold weather, and other treatments to make it fully compatible with fossil diesel. With veg-oil, best to change rubber fuel hoses to viton-lined type, such as Goodyear's "Barricade" hose stamped "for bio-fuel". I don't know if required for renewable diesel, but a good idea when renewing hoses anyway. I've used 1/8" Viton hose for the injector returns for years and no more fuel-weeping like with the "correct" braided hose.

Thanks...all great advice.
One thing i'm worried about. I don't drive her alot, maybe a few miles every 2 days or so, and this type of fuel sitting. I'd read some of the older type ate through the hoses or made them weak but since this is processed hopefully this is not an issue. I assume I could switch back and forth to regular diesel if need be. |

ProPel Diesel Fuel
I'm still waiting to hear any problems with it .
I run an older mechanically injected Diesel engine and it runs noticeably quieter and smoother . You can mix the two with no problems whatso ever .

Propel HPR
I love it, don't burn anything else in my 2005 E320 CDI. Only caution, when you first start on it, it cleans out your entire fuel system including the tank so be prepared to change your fuel filter at least once. I keep a can around just to clean greasy tools and such.
It is a new generation of diesel fuel, not Biodiesel which the refiners and engine manufacturers hate, but chemically indistinguishable from Dino Diesel, a pure alkane made in a cracking tower with a special catalyst and Hydrogen. It's made from Triglycerides (Fats) either animal or vegetable anf you're going to be seeing a lot more of it. The 2021/ 2022 Supply/demand for soybean oil in this country project 45% will be going to this product (Renewable Diesel) that 11 Billion pounds or or over 143 Million gallons

Thanks....Do you think it would be wise to have half a tank of regular diesel fuel and half with this Propel fuel?...Can they be mixed?.. I don't always trust my
fuel gauge so I tend to fill up at around the half or quarter point. |

No problem mixing the two, if you notice at some stations out here the pump says B20 or 20% biodiesel ( or renewable). That's the state mandate , 20% of all diesel fuel must be from renewable sources.
