He managed to make a passenger side key, but after 2 days of attempts and cutting 10 blanks, he finally gave up since he could not make a key that would fit the driver's side or the ignition. Fortunately, he didn't charge me for this. I have to admit that the dealership suggestion really gave me hope! Again, thanks to all of you.

What make you think the dealership route won't work? They have the VIN and they can cut a key for you unless your locks are not stock. I told you it's cheap and I have done it in 2 cars. Good luck.

Btw: you can do keyless remote.

We were able to get replacement keys sometime in 2020 for a '83 300SD W126. They were about $45 each. It takes the "laser" cut keys also known as a 4 track. Smooth along the outer edge with the cuts along the flat face.

It's not hard to rekey a door but I never figured out how to disassemble the ignition cylinder.
