1987 300D bad transmission

So i found what i believe to be a good deal on an old mercedes diesel. The car has little to no rust and the interior is in great shape. The engine starts right up no smoke or excessive coolant pressure. Has the 14 head on it. He only wants 800 for it but the transmission is bad wont move at all. How should i go about checking the transmission/what do i look for or test to try and get it working again.

You can take your chance and just fill up the tranny. Normally a failed b2 piston is no forward but has reverse. B2 piston is an easy fix without removing tranny but space is tight. I don't think there is any other fix you can do without dropping tranny.

Good luck.

i was thinking i could remove the trans cooler feed line and see if its pumping fluid. should tell if the pump is good. Could be a collapsed filter

Who makes a good rebuild kit for the transmission. Looks fairly simple for an auto. Is there another transmission thats better than the 722.3 and by better i mean overdrive maybe lockup and still non electronically controlled.

I wouldn't condemn the trans that's presently in the car just yet. If the fluid level is super low, it's not gonna work. Ditto the filter if it's clogged or collapsed (as you mentioned).
I'd drain the pan and the torque converter. Replace the filter and fluid (with the proper amount) and see what happens.
Did the seller have any info about the transmission? When/why/how it stopped working?
Did he try to get it goin or just park it?

I believe he bought it that way and just parked it. He was going to fix it up but plans changed.

You're asking for an AOD or 200-4R. Nothing made by MB.

200r4 looks like it might be a good idea. Should easily handle 300-400 hp from a 603 or 606. I dont know how big it is compared to the 722.3 so dont know how it would fit but the overdrive and converter lockup would be real nice. for now ill be sticking with a stock trans with for the future ill keep it in mind.

looking at some of the manual swaps it looks like people are having problems with the car jerking around. Is that just what these old 5 speeds do or is than more car related
