240D uneven idle at startup

My 1983 240D 4 spd is sitting in my yard as I work on it. I start it up once a day and let it run for a bit to make sure things are good. When I started it up today, the idle was a bit uneven and then smoothed out. I shut it down, and started it again and it started smoothly. This normal?

Probably needs to be driven some. Idle is hell on diesels, causes them to carbon up and all sorts of other ills.

You could also have a weak glow plug, causing one cylinder to burn poorly until it warms up. You will get a small amount of white smoke if this is the case, worse when it is cold outside.

If you haven't done a valve adjustment, do so -- these engines are sensitive to valve wear.

Maybe you just need to increase the idle speed a little or if there is a rack damper pin behind the injection pump it might need to be backed out (loosened).

Don't take my words on the rack damper. I actually don't think it's available on the 240D
