190D engine swap
Folks, I will be doing an engine swap in a few weeks and am trying to line necessary parts for this installation.
Brief History: I purchased a 1987 190D rust free car which had a blown motor which had already been removed and partially taken apart. The engine was destroyed by running on veg oil and broke a piston ring. A donor car is coming into a few days. Just have to go get it. The donor car is an 85 190D and has a perfectly good running 2.2 liter diesel engine and trans, just the body is falling apart. The goal of this project is to have a running 87 190D using the 2.2 liter donor engine. The first question is , is there anybody who has done this before and second, the engine mounts appear to be different between the 85 and the 87. Are there any other issues that I need to be aware of before I start this project ? Greg |

Take your time and it should be fine. I question the motor mounts being different once you get a better look at them. I don't know but suspect.

Yes, the old engine was a 2.5 turbo and the 2.2 is a 4 non-turbo. If nothing else there will be more room in the engine compartment. Plan to remove the engine, transmission and drive-train from the donor and transplant them into the 87 190D. This would include the driveshaft. Once this project starts I will be creating a new thread.
Are there any other items that would be necessary for the transplant ? |

I'd look at the final drive ratios and see if you need to swap the diff around too.
I havent done a swap like this but I think you will need to swap a lot of vacuum related stuff like lines and valves too? Air cleaner, intake, and related parts maybe? |

Ok I now have picked up the donor car and both are in my driveway. Having compared the engine mounts visually and as suspected they are different. (Mercedes used one type of mount from 84 to 85. They switched the engine to a 5 cyl 2.5 in 1986). Both cars are W201's confirmed both from the plate on the B-pillar and by the VIN's with the dealer. The donor is an 84 190D 2.2L 5 speed manual which will be going into an 87 190D. The engine mount for the 84 starts with a 124 and the mounts for the 87 start with a 201. The dealer supplied the MB part numbers.
So, the question is, do I remove the engine mount arms off the 2.5 L donor vehicle and put them onto the 84 2.2L engine, or as suggested leave the existing mounts on the 2.2 L and transfer the engine as is? |
