Dirt got into prechamber

Was cleaning underneath the cowl with the injectors removed… not smart I know. We’ll pieces of dirt or sticks or whatever debris got into inside the prechamber. The cylinder head is coming off to be redecked anyway. Any chance you guys think I’m screwed and gonna blow this thing up when I start it? The prechambers aren’t being removed unless the machine shop will do that which I am not sure. What I’m curious is if this little dirt specs and broken up twigs will just be able to be vacuumed when I remove the head.

Vacuum it clean you will be fine.

Cool when I get the head off I’ll vacuum it. Can’t see it going anywhere else besides the cylinders. The prechamber leads right to the cylinder.

But the holes are very small at the end of the prechamber. No need to remove the head to vacuum.

Once the head is off blow compressed air from the cylinder side of the pre chamber and the debris should come out where it went in. No need to remove the pre chamber.

The pre-chambers have small holes in the bottom, so it is unlikely any thing got past the-pre-chamber.

You are not doing this. But, if you remove a prechamber while the cylinder head is on the engine you need to have the piston up near the top because as the prechamber is pulled out it peels off the deposits on the outside of the nose of the prechamber and the deposits fall down on top of the piston.

When that happens and the piston is up there close to TDC I took a vacuum cleaner and put that hose end over the glow plug hole and is sucked the deposits right out.

However, on mine the deposits were dry.

Organic matter like sticks and oil crud are of little concern. Sand and gravel is the worry, but with the heads off anyway, they should be easy to clean.

If the head is being milled, the prechambers have to come out. So any issues with getting the dirt out, while in the head, have just been mitigated.

Got it. Thanks fellas.

What about hard carbon soot or fine bits of metal?

My injector heat shield was stuck solid, I finally just removed the prechamber and somehow some of the hard carbon and some of the fine metal bits from when I was trying to get the shield out fell onto the piston. I could get the metal mostly out with a magnet and vacuum.

How big of a concern is this and what should I do to get it out?

Stupid prechamber ruined a brand new MB slide hammer tool I think…

Those pre chambers are tough. As for the grit inside the combustion chamber I imagine it will blow through.

It was interesting how much hard carbon there was in there… maybe the OE prechamber wasn’t seated fully or something?

When I wiped the bore there was a lot that came out in chunks.

I don’t know what metal fell down or how. It couldn’t really have gone through the prechamber. Some of what came out may not have actually been metallic/magnetic. The carbon shards were also sticky/oily.

The prechamber was beat up though. I torqued the slide hammer in as far and hard as I could and the treads pulled out twice. Probably because of the angled insertion of the injectors/threads into the prechamber.

In the end I wiped with magnets, vacuumed with straws inserted down to the piston, and I think it’s pretty clean.

looks good!
