If he wrote what happened then probably that was what happened.

When car overfilled with oil/diesel mix will not give white smoke as described. It will splash oil all over the engine compartment, been there done that.

Yeah I can’t see the lift pump causing a misfire and dumping white smoke. It’s beyond a lift pump.

That’s the plan. I’m waiting on the injectors to come back and do a compression test. Then pull the head.

I do the compression check w injectors out, using the adapter in the Harbor Freight kit. Easier than using the glow plug holes.

Definitely. A shame they don’t have the injector adapter for the glow plugs on the 606. I have to order it from Benz Monday at $120. Because the thread pitch is different than my old 617/603 motors.

In the heavy diesel industry this phenomenon is called "making oil" - the lift pump leaks into the crankcase and overtime can actually fill up a gallon.

Here’s the update:

Spoke with the fuel injector shop. 3 injectors we’re just spraying fuel. 3 were popping “ok”. Spoke with the guy I got the car from. Cylinder 3 was apparently the issue. He told me when he cracked the injector line it didn’t make a difference to how the engine ran. Sounds like we’ve got more than an injector. Next is compression test. We’ll see what we’re working with. Maybe too much fuel could’ve bent a rod.

Well sounds like perhaps the three bad injectors may have increased the base oil level. Personally I would do nothing more on that engine until the compression is checked.

Todays discoveries. Installed a good “working” set of injectors used, but all worked. Cylinder 2 and 3 are dead and do not respond to cracking the injector lines.

Running it with the intake manifold off presents the discovery of intake valve 5 and 6 leaking compression shooting out air revving it. So the valves aren’t seating perfectly there.

So compression test and leakdown test.

Off with the head.

Now we know how many miles we should be able to get to before engine issues. I'd suggest pulling the engine, replace the bearings, rings and remove head and have it rebuilt. Obviously inspect the piston/cylinders. It will be interesting to see the condition of the cylinder walls and pistons so take plenty of pics.

Also get a pic of the wear on the oil pump chain tensioner slide.

Possibly a head gasket breech between 2nd and 3rd cylinders. Could look like the poor sealing intake valves. He saw.

I would also check engine number to see if it is the original engine. He may get lucky and the head was already done once is another possibility.

I tend to test as much as possible. Before I take an engine apart. I learnt to do this the hard way.

Well, I just got a donor car for super cheap with half the miles. 202k on the clock and runs perfect. I am going to keep this thread alive with pictures and updates as a little progress thread to bringing this e300 back to life. I love saving these w210 diesels. They’re just such an incredible car to drive with some serious power.

I decided to not rebuild it because in all honesty, the parts to rebuild the head, and the labor were the price of this car. I will keep the motor for further analysis and exam on a stand at a later date. But for now, I’m looking to just do a swap.

Sane approach. Original engine with those kind of miles you would more likely have gotten into big money than not.
