DPF Regeneration, how to know?

It seems like DPF is a very discussed issue in this forum but I still have question about it.
I have a 2008 MB E320 bluetec and my question is: when driving the car, how to know if a regeneration is happening? If it is happening and I am reaching my final destination, my garage, for example, what to do?
