1983 240d 300k+ manual transmission bushings
 

I need transmission bushings under my car farthest from the engine. The black bushings near the engine seem fine. The bushing on the other end do not exist. It's just metal on metal.

I have a manual transmission and they don't say for manual transmissions.

Are these the bushings I need?

No, search on W123 manual transmission shifter bushings. Clean and lube the shifter assembly, replace all of the bushings and adjust the shift rod lengths. You'll like the result.

Those are the ones that go onto in the shift rod ends at the shifter. They are a PITA to install. I used a vise and socket with some heat. Probably should have tried some lube as well. If you want shifter bushings those are different. They are likely a dealer item.

I thought he was speaking of the tranny equivalent of a motor mount.... is it shifter bushing he needs?

Is there a particular condition that causes the nuts to loosen and the rods to auto-shorten or elongate?

It looks like I need these. I actually just need the bushings but not sure if you can buy they separately.

Interesting, now that I remember, I've seen both types used. I even got the clear ones at the dealer. They had the parts diagram that showed placement so I believe they were correct. I had to shave them on the sides to make them flat after the bushing was installed.
So, which is the correct part? It could be both.
Edit: one says gearshift bushing output shaft to shift rod and is black 201 part#. The other clear one just says gearshift bushing 115 part #. Maybe a supersede condition or late vs early model. It is somewhat confusing, but the black ones are much easier to install. I wonder if they last as long. Both parts appear to go in the same place.

The rods should be adjusted after replacing the bushings to account for wear in the transmission and the shifter. I doubt the length of the rod changed by a measurable amount.

Had the same issue on my old 240D. I used a bit of fuel line as a quick and dirty temporary fix until i got the parts.

Parts just came today. I'll install tomorrow. I can put my car in reverse without lifting the stick. I'm hoping this fixes that problem or maybe makes it a little harder to put in reverse by accident.

It's no fun at a stop light when you hit the gas and you go backwards.

Be careful removing the clips. 1 of them popped off and hung up on the plate below the drive shaft. Took me forever to find it by feeling around.

I didn't make any adjustments as mentioned by Sugar Bear but I plan to do that within the next week.

It's didn't help with the problem of not having to lift the stick in order to get it into reverse. I've read some people just replace the entire shifter assembly to resolve this issue. Not sure if there's an easier fix but I'll keep searching.

You'll need the procedure/steps to make the adjustments. In short, the shifter gets pinned/locked in neutral, the rods get disconnected on the threaded end, the transmission levers get centered between their respective gears and then the length of each rod rod gets adjusted so it falls into its lever without pushing the lever in either direction.

Mark the current length of the rods before making adjustments in case you need to go back the starting point. Take pics before disconnecting rods.

Looking for some help regarding this project.

I just replaced the three bushings below the shifter and now I cannot shift gears. I assume that I need to make some adjustments but unsure how to do this.
