2 quarts of oil shooting out filter house in 5 seconds

So upon startup in the 617 non turbo, when oil is cold, it will pressurize oil filter housing so much that it blows a 25 ft. Jet stream of oil via blowing the Oring out of the side of the canister. Canister lid studs are fine, nuts are not over or under torqued, there is a ridiculous build up of pressure for some reason. Correct weight oil, new mahn oil filter and o ring running 15w-40 rotella. Any ideas?

Well, the filter system is a pretty basic in/out circuit. Sounds like the “in” part is working okay.

Take a look at this diagram. You may have a blockage.

Yeh I thought it might be a check valve.

That check valve is for the bypass (fine-filtered) flow, which is quite low compared to the primary filter.

Did this problem start concurrent with the last oil/filter change?

Go back to the diagram. Item a is the thermostat and the item listed as a star valve is a is the oil filter housing pressure relief valve (supposed to allow oil flow by bypassing the oil filter if the oil filter got plugged). I am not sure if one of those could block off the oil flow.

Also, there is supposed to be an oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump.

Some filters have been known to come with a thin O-ring compared to others.

I did write this one.

Are you sure you't don't have a foreign object under the filter lid?

Or stuck in the central pipe where oil gets returned? How would you check that?Maybe suck on it?

Don't think the cover will even go on backwards on my '85. I have learned to check which way the Mercedes Benz (or whatever it says) is facing before removal
