W221 Bluetec vs W212 Bluetec reliability

Hey all,

Looking to retire my 240D to weekend duty since I have a long freeway commute to work now and am looking for a daily upgrade. I'd like to stick with diesels given their relative efficiency, and am currently looking into the W221 S350 Bluetec and W212 E250 Bluetec. How is the reliability between the two, and which one would be more reliable overall? Would love some input from owners. Thanks!

While I don't own either, the S350 has the V6 which would be prone to the oil cooler seals issue...has the OM642, correct? $$$$$

I've never heard anything bad about the E250. The OM651 inline four is bulletproof.

While you're looking, you might want to consider an 05-06 E320 CDI. Now that the warranty on the braking system is extended to 25 years, I don't see a weak spot in these cars. A lot less expensive than the E250.

Yes I do believe it is the OM642. Thanks, actually totally forgot those existed. Might have to look for a low mileage example. E class seems like the perfect overall size for me

All I have to say is that you are going from a Cessna to a Boeing 787 between the W123 240D and either of these cars.

I would be prepared with at least an iCarSoft MBII and a copy of the WIS (or a clone Xentry system), you are going to need it if you plan to do any DIY.

I own 4 OM642s so if you have any questions let me know!

Daughter and husband bought my E250 ten years ago and it's been cranking trouble free since then, except for the BlueTec recalls. Totally reliable and over 100K miles.
