W110 rear wheel bearing replacement help!!
 

Hey everybody,

I‘m not sure if anyone can help me on this forum, which is why I‘m also placing this on vintage.

I have the rear axle removed, and I do not know how to remove the bearing from the axle half. Does anyone have any insight for a person who hasn‘t done this before?

It looks similar to a W108 setup. The bearing is an interference/friction fit on the axle, it should be pressed off. I watched a serious old school pro change them by cutting a u shape notch in his heayy metal work bench, placing the axle perpendicular in the U with the bearing just above the U. He then lightly tapped the axle downward and the bearing came right off. The axle seal must be placed on the axle before the bearing is reinstalled.

Pack the bearing with high quality NLGI 2 grease and the back of the seal to help retain the spring.

Years ago, on my W110 gasser, I pulled the axles and brought them along with new bearings to a local machine shop. This was all very pre-internet and youtube.

In the other post about taking it some place for removal and installation. You also should be thinking about how to get the seal and new bearing on.

I am curious. Is it just the bearing that is pressed on the shaft or is it the bearing followed by a metal collar that is also pressed onto the shaft.

Wear eye protection or any other stuff to make you safe.

If it is just the bearing you can use a dremel type tool with a power cord (harbor freight has them) with a cut off wheel


In this vid forget about the part making your own discs. The tool should come with some small and slightly thicker and larger cut off discs. What is important is that they cut even hardened steel.

If i is a ball bearing you make a cut on opposites sides if the race and remove that. If you can't get the balls and cage out cut through the cage.

After that on the shaft is the inner race. Avoid cutting any area where the seal rides. Cut into the race on one or opposite sides. You don't have to go all the way down to the shaft. When you feel it is deep enough getting a metal chisel and stick it in the crack/grove you and and apply a sharp blow with a hammer and they usually crack or spread open enough for you to slide off the inner race.
