1983 300SD TM Fluid - Mobil Delvac 1
Hello All,
Can I get a quick poll on what transmission fluid you are using in a MB 722.303 transmission. In the past I used Dextron III / Mercuron High Milage, and currently using Valvoline Maxlife Multi-vehicle. The transmission is original with about 200K miles. I am using Mobil Delvac 1 in both my Allison transmissions and really like it. I am thinking a fluid with a bit higher viscosity may be better for the old TM. Any opinions? Thanks.

I’m of the same mind. The Allison spec that maps to the obsolete Dexron iii spec is probably the best we can hope for. Some on here have run maxlife, which is a Low viscosity option, and claim good results. Reality is that ATFs historically sheared down quite a bit so it’s viable that an LV fluid would work fine.
Personally, I generally run Walmart Supertech Dex/Merc with Lubeguard red. I run a blend of their hm and regular, since I don’t think their hm is a lower viscosity fluid. I have blended in a quart or two of Mobil 1 ATF before, mas that is a good fluid. I’m sure Delvac 1 is as good or better.
