BD's oneof the respected name in the diesel truck scene...

...I haven't dealt with them, though; they don't mess around with "old-school" pickups (few people do; easier to write computer code than to actually do engine mods )

I have a BD 4" exhaust on my truck and it very nice and well made. You should visit them for one of their "Dyno Daze" All the modded trucks show up to make sick power on the dyno. RT

Please check this thread. These guys are targeting 500 Hp out of the 3 litre Mercedes turbodiesel:

who says a 2.5 turbo diesel cant be 400hp?!

In the messages there are links to the dynocharts, pics and videos

Lame?
Different applications, thats all. 500hp from a 3liter is very impressive. But how long will the motor last at maximum power? How long will it last period? Tweaked US pickup diesels can make 150%+ of their rated factory power and still last 100K+ while towing trailers. Heavy trailers. I'm sure a 500hp MB diesel is a lot of fun but its gonna go bang sooner than later. A more realistic power figure would be 200-225hp. This power level would likely allow the engine a fairly normal lifespan. There are truck diesels that are over 700hp+ and 1200ft/lbs torque but they don't last long either. Choose your poison. RT

I agree with the power versus longevity theory, on the dyno I have seen around 136bhp from the turbo OM 616 but when it was launched, it was detuned to a measly 91 bhp to preserve the engine for over 500,000 miles service, all this with a bigger radiator, sodium filled exhaust valves, oil pump and cooler from 300D turbo, oil gallery pistons and high capacity water pump along with nitrided crank.

Hello Gurkha,
I would like to know more about this OM616 turbo, anything that is more than the stock OM616 72bhp is of interest to me. Were you involved with the development of this engine?
I drive gassers here because of the nasty road tax structure for privately owned diesels(4 times more than petrol, which is already too much...), I have always wanted to go back to diesels, having driven 170DS(W191), 240D(W115) and 300D(W123).
Have a good week.

These Super-turbo Mercs of Finland have seen typically 200 000 to 300 000 miles up before super-conversion. They are still daily drivers making 40 000 miles a year. You do not race every day.

The engines were not opened before or during conversion = standard turboengine.

The secret is huge intercooler which results in cool cylinder head extending the lifetime of the engine. Standard pistons and crank last forever with synthetic oil.

Hi Nachi,

As you may be aware, OM 616 is nothing but the OM 617 minus one cylinder. The turbo version has existed with MB since the 80s when it was developed to provide more power than the existing 72bhp commercial OM 616 engine. I was at the office of the Indian MB partner Bajaj Tempo where this engine was converted to Euro-I and was undergoing tests. It is a simple procedure to implement except the crank part. All the parts are from the existing OM 617 turbo except that the 4 cylinder existing OM 616 crank needs to be strengthened.

Hello Gurkha,
Would Bajaj Tempo sell a complete engine? Is it IDI or DI? This OM616 sounds like a worthwhile conversion for my M115 engined W115 200. All I would need to complete the changeover to diesel would be the 3.69 or 3.46 axle ratio.
I guess I should do a search to find more info. Thanks for the info.
Have a good week.

Hi nachi,

The engine is IDI with pre chambers, it is available in Euro-I to Euro-IV version and it is still being fitted to the Gurkha vehicles destined for Germany, Italy, France and other parts of Europe.

I can get the engine for you from the factory by pulling some strings, question is how do you intend to get it shipped to the place of your destination, shipping is a huge and costly hindrance and you would also have to deal with the local customs wherever your engine lands.

Question What is projected cost

Hello Gurkha
For engine and shipping to Detroit, Michigan, USA...
Any additional modifications needed, or is this a straight engine swap and go?
Will this fry the OEM transmission?

The engine as such would need no mods whatsoever, you just have to specify the emission specs you need, shipping to Michigan would be costly, I can tell you that, you might have to get clearance from your local customs as well as DOT.

The standard 4 speed can handle 91bhp and the 5 speed on the 300D is rated for 170bhp so it should handle this engine easily.
