No EGR on a 1980 240d?

Hi,
I have a 1980 240d with a 4 spd manual.
My car does not have an egr valve.
What was the first year for the egr in the 240d?
Thanks.

My '81 240D also has no EGR. I think '81 started the pencil type glow plugs. Then '82 added the EGR. These years saw changes to the vacuum pump, idle control knob, and cruise control. Probably more that I am not aware of. I don't think model year is the right way to look at changes. The serial number in the VIN is more important.

A quick parts search on Pelican, shows no EGR prior to 1982 for the 240D. I would think it safe to assume this was the transition year for the US market.

I also have an 80 240D 4-spd, yeah no EGR.
The Blow By fumes come for top of the Valve Cover, and run into the
intake manifold on the under side.
You need to replace the 2 rubber Elbo`s once in a while as they crack and
make an oily mess.

Also 80 first year they went from a 21 gallon Fuel tank to a 17 gallon.
82/83 17 gallon, but Plastic tank.

A worthy upgrade I made on my 81 was installing a 300d 21 gallon metal tank.

Even though there's a lot less mess without the EGR to add soot, a catch can is still a great addition for any of these breather systems. They really cut down on the oil fed into the intake and only cost like $20.

X100 on adding a catch can. It keeps the oil fumes out of the intake, off the valves and out of the ring lands reducing the occurrence of stuck piston rings.

Well our 80, I got it from the original owner about 11 years ago.....
for free. It was just a few miles from rolling over to 306K miles.
We now have 380 something K on her now, runs like a singer sewing machine.
Has a manual gear box, uses a qt of oil about every 1200 miles. So not too
bad I guess.
Iam not to worried about the engine getting messed up burning some oil
fumes. How ever if it had a EGR, yeah that really messes up the intake
system.

The 82/83 240 had the oil separator and what a mess it made.

Lots of guys burn Waste Engine Oil, and that is OK?
