‘84 300D only sporadically starts in or shifts to absolute first gear

I understand there’s an adjustment available, I’ve never done it.

There are times, if I’m going up a steep hill, it will not shift into first no matter what. Sometimes if I let off the gas and floor it a few times it will do it.

Is a PITA.
