The other day my Aux fan decided it had worked long and hard enough and quit working with a thump. Being one who would rather repair than replace something I set about seeing if I could repair the fan. After checking the posts here I removed the fan assy from the car and went to work on it at the bench.
After taking it apart I noticed that there were metal bits falling out of the front bearing along with small stones. I drilled out the four factory rivets and removed the bearing (FAG 544819A) While calling the local bearing supply shops I was told that this part was no longer in the FAG listing and was given the number to FAG (800-243-2532) to check with them. FAG told me that the bearing had been discontinued and there was no replacement in their listings. FAG did give me the dimensions (ID 12mm, OD 28mm, width 8mm, deep grove single row) and thought that may help in my search. Back to the local bearing shops and they were able to match the dimensions to a NTN 6001 sealed bearing
Reassembly was easy, I enlarged the rivet holes to a "loose" 1/8 inch and used 1/8 inch short steel pop rivets to secure the bearing plate to the cover. Reinstalled the fan assy and replaced the fuse.
The best part of this whole repair was the cost! only $6.12 for the bearing and I am back on the road with cold A/C and normal temps on the gauge.
Life with a 123 really is good:p
