My 1980 240d with manual trans is making a little grinding noise when putting it into 3rd also. It is fine in all other gears and is fine if I shift into 3rd very slowly.... I will try the redline myself.... but if mine and diesel daddy's trans go south...I was wondering if anyone has done their own either clutch dog or synchro replacement on one of these trans.... ? Seems like they would be fun to take apart... Greg

And the results were...?

I have a 1981 280SEL with a 4 speed that grinds going into 3rd and am VERY interested in hearing how things worked out for Greg (leathermang, that is) and dieseldaddy and their respective manual transmissions. What cured this for either of you?

My car has not been driven much in the last several years (prior to my buying it), so I'm hoping a good fluid change (I have some RedLine synth ATF ready to put in) will cure it.

Thanks in advance...

Greg,
You need to send that 240 to a GOOD home.

I know you are right, but would appreciate you not bringing it up so often.... it gives me the feeling you have designs on her... I think I will go up front and lock the gate... just ' on principle ' as they say in the manual.......

3-4 grinding

You know, Greg, the correct answer would be: "the synthetic ATF fixed it and the transmission shifts like the day it left the factory".

I'm so disappointed...but at least you didn't say you needed a new synchro...yet.

I will say that as soon as I get it INTO the transmission... don't want to stretch my credibility TOO far...
