How about this Broken EBay 300SDL?
I was pretty interested in the $700 range but now I think its past my valuation.
Any speculation about how bad the engine is torn up, and how do I prevent this from happening to my '87 300D? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1845116128 Ken300D |

What's likely wrong with it: ruined bearings. Possibly worn pistons and cylinder walls, too. If it also overheated before it was shut down, a new cylinder head. Total will be between $1500 and $7500 for repairs. The window problem is a $2 plastic part, easy fix.
How to prevent this: CHANGE THE OIL FREQUENTLY. Chain wear (stretch) is directly related to oil quality and change frequency -- if the oil is substandard or not changed often enough, the chains go. If the timing chain is stretched excessively at low milage, replace the oil pump chain, too. This will probably require pulling the engine to get the oil pan off, but I don't know for sure. If your oil pressure ever drops suddenly, shut the engine of IMMEDIATELY even if in heavy traffic, else the bearings will melt. Peter

There is a chain for valve timing and a chain to drive the oil pump? This I did not know.
If my valve timing chain had 12+ deg of stretch at 272K what kind of condition is my oil chain likely in? My car was serviced pretty religously with oil changes, and got Mobil one quite alot in it's life. |

The oil pump chain is short and direct. It does not make alot of turns. It also has a spring loaded tensioner rail. Something had to be seriously wrong if it went out at under 120k miles. This chain will last until the engine does not have enough compression to crank if the oil is changed like it should be.

Non turbo MB diesels typically have an oil pump driven off the injection timer shaft, turbo engines have a chain driven pump, mainly because it is much higher capacity (the oil sprays on the pistons use a lot of oil!).
12 degrees of stretch at 272 thousand miles isn't bad, most chains don't last that long. I'd replace the pump chain if I had the bottom of the engine apart simply because it is inexpensive and easy to do at that point. Why risk a failure later? Otherwise, it is too hard to get to just to change it due to milage. I've never heard of another one failing. Worn out oil pumps, yes, broken chains, no. Peter

Something is really wrong with a diesel engine that only goes 110K...I would assume that if the guy bought the car from a dealer it had to be in pretty good shape....a rebuilt longblock in this car might put you upside down in a value/cost to repair ratio
I think the car should not sell for more than $1000..otherwise its not a good value as I don;t think the car repaired is worth anymore that 5-6K Warren 1992 300SD 144K Columbus Ohio |

At $700 if it were really nice cosmetically I would have looked for another trashed car with a good engine. You'd have to assume that the engine in the car is royally messed up - probably seized.
The 86-87 diesel engines should be a drop-in fit. Not sure about the 77-85 5-cyl engines or the 90-93 2.5-liter diesels. Maybe a 240D engine? Looks like someone has taken it off-Ebay. The last I saw it was somewhere around $1400. Ken300D |
