This was as good as it gets for the all-around Mercedes-Benz diesel sedans in America....

What came after was technologically superior in diesel engine performance and economy, but the thrill of cost efficiency in the chassis', bodies and simplicity was gone.

Our family enjoyed these now vintage Mercedes-Benz diesels for years, purchasing several brand new models of various years, and over One Million miles logged in them. We knew a good thing when we saw them!

Enter DEF...... and forget about it, the party was over....

The 86-87 SDLs got me hooked. Loved that chassis. The turning radius was jaw dropping for a car that length. Then I discovered the W124s, with the same engine were noticeably faster, had even better turning, and just as solid, albeit smaller.
Can't go wrong with a well kept example.

If it wasn't for the rear deck rust, and lack of a diesel, the SEC was IMO the sexiest rendition of the W126.

Agreed! If not for the SECs being gassers......I'd of owned a couple by now too.

You're right about the 124s being more desirable in terms of performance. I hard passed them to a new 210 turbodiesl in '99, then a preowned '06 211 turbodiesel in 2013. Love the car!!!

The kid down the road from me put a 606 with a 722.6 5 speed in a 350SDL. It felt every bit as fast as a 560SEL.
