brake pad heat shelds?? Shims?

When I changed the pads on my 300d, I put the shims behind the pads back. Are these necessary? They squeal like crazy. If I use the brake greese, do I put it behind the pad or the shims.

Just changed my front pads.....

I did not use shims, but did use brake paste that I got from the MB dealer in little foil packets, about $.50 per. I applied it on the back of the pads and on the sides, not touching the pad surface, per the MB manual.

No squeal, no stick, just great brakes.

PS, I have the bendix calipers, if that makes a difference.

What kind of pads did you get. I tried aftermarket, used shims, goo, etc. to stop the squeak but nothing worked.

Switched to OEM, no noise at all.

I believe ATE

If not, it was one of the OEM pads.
