240D Vacuum Leak ?

Read a lot of the messages about auto trans shifting which got me thinking about possible vacuum leaks. I checked all the tubes today. There is a green with a white stripe white goes inside next to the brake booster that wouldn't hold anything. The two outlets on the main tube from the vacuum pump also held nothing. One of them had been repaier(?) with epoxy or the like.

Are these results typical? Does the vacuum pump need to be rebuilt?

Im anxious to see some replies. My 1980 240 D (250K miles) barely has enough vacuum to lock all the doors. On rare occasion the engine will not turn off. All the visible hose connections look OK. If it gets worse I'll have to do some sleuthing.

Seems like I have heard that some cars have an electric vacuum pump (backup?) for locking the doors.... could that be added to a normal car ? Greg

True. Shifts badly unless less at full accelerator and doesn't seem to shut down quite as well as the 350 SDL.

it is easy enough to see if you need a rebuild

I would have to look at the diagrams (I probably will tonight and edit this post in the morning), but you can measure the vacuum where the small supply line comes off the large black line that goes to the booster. Disconnect the small line that comes off laterally and replace with your tester.

Basically, you want to measure the vacuum at the supply line with only the pump and the brake booster attached. You should get something like 20 psi (I think, just from memory). That should tell you whether you have sufficient vac and need a rebuild or not.

More likely, you have one or more elements/connectors upstream that need testing...

best of luck

Edfer, On 1980 240d's prior to March production they put out a tech bulletin saying you should have an extra rubber band on the filler flap, they mention cold weather causing vacuum leak,,, but this was within three years of the car being new... and as old as they are now it could be happening at any temp.. the bulletin was Service Information No. 80/10.
