Regulator Brush Replacement

I've performed searches regarding alternators/regulators and brushes and am relatively certain that I could restore charging by simply replacing my regulator brushes. I've seen mention in posts about doing this and have also seen mention of instructions in an earlier post, but I cannot find this post. Does any one remember this post or can anyone provide intstruction on how to replace just the brushes? I realize that replacing the regulator is probably simpler, but I'm looking for the lowest cost method.

Oh, yeah, and would I have to go to the dealer for the brushes, or could I buy them from fastlane? The local dealer treats me as if I'm a pain in the ass because I work on my own car. Seems like the parts department really wants to only sell expensive accessories rather than real parts.

I remember a forum member went to Ace Hardware and purchased generic brush stock and ground them down to size. It was for the blower motor, but the same concept. Cheers, Andrew Seidel.

You may not be able to get the exact rebuilt kit for these alternators. so once you have the carbon brushes out go to the Ace or other similar guys and get a closest matching one then fileit to the same shape. I have not done this so cant tell you more but look under blower motor carbon brush replace and you will find some nice posts.

Hope this helps. Dont forget to post what happens. This is the only way we all get the feed back. If you decide to rebuilt yourself, please take pictures for others in future to see.
