I've noticed something about KBB. They show way below actual market value. I just sold my Suzuki Samurai for $2,000. According to KBB, it wasn't worth a penny over $1300. I researched for sale ads for similar units and found them to be listed more along the lines of $2,000 to $2,500. I then went to NADA, and ran a value there. Their figures matched market value almost perfectly. I'm currently trying to sell my Saturn SC2 as well. KBB is also way below what the for sale ads are going for on that one.

Last time I wanted to buy this dark red 300CD that was on E-bay. Today I saw that very same car... looked better than mine..

Yep, I agree that KBB value is unrealistically low. Gotta remember, the objective was to keep the poor guy from paying 4 or 5 grand for a rust bucket not worth half that much. Seems to have worked!!

I wouldn't buy it except for a "beater" for about $1000 or less. If you can see that much rust, imagine how much hidden rust you can't see.

Rust it the hardest thing to fix on a car and if done right, it is very expensive. Then you will still have rust spots appearing no matter how much paint you put on it.

There are rust free southern cars available. Wait until you can find one.

I would rather buy a car with mechanical problems than rust problems. Mechanical parts can be rebuilt to new or replaced with new, but rust can never be repaired to be as good as new.

300cd

Ron, if you are near New Jersey, then do a search in the car classifieds/car parts section for 300cd.
I posted some months ago for a guy in New Jrsey.
He probably still has it.

offer him 2500, I'm sure he'll take it.
pics included in post.

If you have 5500 bucks to burn, spend a grand, come to the Southern or Western part of the country and get a rust free example for 3-4000.

I recently turned down a 300CD in Pittsburgh, Ca for 2800 only because it had a salvage title. It had no rust, was a theft recovery (but was complete) and barked the tires everytime it upshifted into 2nd gear under moderate throttle. Very strong car.

Engine and car had 126k on it- I regret not getting it now--

run, don't walk away from that one whose pics that Holson posted. It just ain't worth it-- remember, rust never sleeps and it is working forn the INSIDE OUT!

Happy Hunting,

That one showed up on E-bay eventually, and I believe it went for something like 2500.

I drove three hours to look at it, and turned it down because the guy wouldn't let me put plates on it for a proper test drive, and didn't think a PPI was "worth the hassle" for a $3K car. Oh well, his loss. I would have paid $3K and been very happy with it too.

Turtle v.s. the hare

Minemapper, you did the right thing.

I'd never buy a car without a check up, even though I was considering that car also.

Patience and know how will land a good car.

yup, his loss.
