Need Motor Mount Hardware
 

Looking for the little motor mount shields that go on top of the rubber mounts, and a set of the two bolts that hold a motor mount to the frame from the top (the ones driving by 6mm hex).

A previous owner/mechanic left off the shields on both sides and the top motor mount hardware (two bolts) that hold the motor mount to the frame on the driver's side.

It will probably be a trip to the dealer for these, but I'd thought it would be worthwhile to ask here in case someone is doing a complete part-out of a 300D and has already taken out the engine.

So, basicly you're saying that one of your mtotr mounts is completely loose. Your car must shake like hell. Try looking at Performance Products, they may have the shield at least. You also could give Phil a call.

Actually it doesn't shake that badly - but on the other hand I have no other experience with W123 diesels to know how they should feel. The shock absorber on the loose side (driver's side) at least provides some hold-down. I'd have to assume the engine jumps around a bit when starting and when shifting gears.

Should feel nice with new motor mounts, engine shock absorbers and shock absorber mounts!

And I think the shields should be there to help keep oil and dirt out of the open cavities in the rubber mounts. It should help them last longer.

What a shame someone did the job in such a poor manner. The mount bolts are not all that hard to get to on the turbo side with a universal joint. On the injection pump side there's easy access if you take the shock absorber and its top mount out first.

Thought I would check and see if anyone had the shields laying around, but they shouldn't be too expensive at the dealer.

Motor Mount Shield: $10.50 each

Motor Mount (top) Bolts: $2.25 each

Ouch.

But I feel better having all the right motor mount hardware in place. The shield is bigger than I thought it would be, so I see the reason now for all the advice to get it out of the way first before attempting to remove the top bolts.

The good thing I will say about the dealer is that they had the parts in my hand in about three minutes. That's actually two things, that they had the parts, and that they found them quickly. :)

I wish I'd checked your post earlier. I'm parting out a 78 300D and sure I have those bolts lying around in the shop floor. Not sure about the shields but if they were on it originally they should still be there.Put the 5 cyl and auto trans into my 240D.Probably gonna end up with a pile of parts since the 240 doesn't have pwr windows or sunroof. Sorry I wasn't there for you ken.:(

Hey that's alright man - I knew it was a long shot for a quick response - yet I knew there would be someone somewhere on the Forum that was parting out that would eventually see the post.

You or anyone can help me further though. I think from the drawings in the parts book that the shields install with the raised section facing the back of the car. You know, they aren't entirely flat but have a bent-up "wing" on one end.

Can anyone confirm that's the right shield orientation, I didn't have them to observe during motor mount removal. I'm guessing the "wing" helps throw oil up and away from the mount.

On a 240D they have little arrows stamped into them that should point forward. They are more like ">" symbols. Hope that helps, Jim

Yes, they have those also - thought that's what the V was for. With the V pointing forward the "wing" is toward the back. It makes sense but I didn't want to guess.
