AK to PA w/o alternator

I think that one takes the cake. I would have had a new one waiting for me in Seattle, at the very least!!! I don't know if that takes that cake for stupidity, or what. . . . is that you weren't sure if it was the alternator or not? I guess that would work, as long as you didn't have an electric fuel pump to rely on, and never used turn signals, radio, wipers, etc., but I bet within the next three months you also had to replace the battery as well!!!

Great info, ya'll!

I'm so excited that I can get started without the starter - it might be gone - by pulling or coasting... let me see now:
I do have an automatic tranny but that's okay, right? Just keep it in neutral until about 30 mph and then slip it into regular drive... with key and glow plug at normal operating positions, continue towing until it starts. have I got it right?

I do have a schematic that I am beginning to understand.
I'm headed out to get shrink wrap. Tell me something about guages in the wire... are all black wires 35mm... each color IS a certain mm, across the board?
I'm going to cut the wire bundle covering off the wires, keep it and perhaps re-wrap when I finish replacing the wires. Sound good?

I'm going to get this done... with such good advice I don't feel alone in this. And knowing there are folks who care enough to pitch in their experiences is comforting, to say the least.

Oh, can I use the multimeter I just got to check the starter? what do I touch the + and - ends to? sounds like I don't know anything but actually I don't and I gotta start somewhere.

I'm guaranteed to have more questions later today.
Until then,
Debbie

Wire color has nothing to do with wire size... each company on any car can choose what color to use for anything it wants...

If you just make sure that the size you use is bigger than what was there then you are safe...

Yes, cutting off the wrap and saving it sounds good... you might just lay it back up where it was when your finished and use other tape to hold it in place...

If you are being pulled to start.. be sure to keep your hand on the shift lever in order to put it back into neutral quickly once it starts.. don't want to dent your tow vehicle...

I do think I have read that push starting these cars with autos is ok.. but I do not want to go on the record as saying that... someone will speak up with solid info on that...

I personally would not use a multimeter near the starter... it has a hot lead to it... and if you touch the wrong place could fry your meter...also.. do not wear any rings or watches.. etc when working around a starter... bad burns can result...

I don't have my manual in front of me but I swear it DOES have pull/push starting instructions for the auto tranny. If memory is correct everything should be fine at around 35 mph. If compression is up to snuff and it's above 75F glow plugs should not even be needed.
Also does anyone know if MB uses a fuseable link? If they do look for it before tearing into a wiring harness.

Debbie,

Ask and ye (y’all?) shall receive. On the wiring diagram, the number is the size in square millimeters and the letters are shorthand for color.

Here’s the best I can find for the size conversions and color codes, according to the W114/115 CD available through this web site. The second color, if listed, is the color of the stripe. I always chase the wire to make sure it goes to where the diagram says it goes. The wiring diagram is just a piece of paper.

ws = white
gn = green
br = brown
ge = yellow
gr = grey
rs = pink
bl = blue
rt = red
sw = black
el = ivory
nf = neutral
vi = violet

0.75 sq. mm = 18 AWG
1 sq. mm = 16 AWG
2.5 sq. mm = 12 AWG
4 sq. mm = 10 AWG
6 sq. mm = 8 AWG
8 sq. mm = 8 AWG
16 sq. mm = 4 AWG

Before you dive into the electrical stuff, I recommend you look through an automotive handbook dealing with electric systems. My rummage sale wonder is called “Automotive Electrical Handbook,” by Jim Horner (ISBN 0-89586-238-7), and I still use it for ideas and reminders. It even says what AWG means. I’m sure your local library has something similar.

Regarding the tow start, about the only thing I forgot was to turn the idle knob up (clockwise) all the way before putting it into gear. Page 59 of owner’s manual says pretty much the same stuff. 30mph is plenty fast, and high gear for an automatic. Don't pump the foot throttle - pull it until it runs on its own, then shift to neutral. You only forget the hand signals once.

rebootit, no fusible links on the old daBenz that I've found.

Debbie,
It's American Wire Gauge- thickness standard that wire and sheetmetal manufacturers have been using since before we were around--

Home in record time

MB Roadside assistance came out and jump started the starter, glow plugs heated and driving position, car in neutral. I'm home, averaging 72 mph... speedo is reading too slow. Anyone know how to calibate one?

Awesome automobile answerers: All assistance's appreciated, as always!!
