All:

First off, sorry for the delay in responding, but I did manage to pull that fitting off the intake, and it was indeed somewhat clogged. Cleaned it up, squirted a bunch of carb cleaner into the hole (in the intake), blew air through the tube (disconnected at the other end, but not from the devicxe it tees off to under the intake manifold).

In any case, seems to be running much better! I think something's still screwy because when it ran truly right before, it also shifted better for whatever reason-it's a bit jerky now, especially 1-2 (not unlike my TE, which has been that way forever-but this one was right at one time). FWIW it has a new air pump.

Any additional thoughts? And Thanks

Check all your vacuum connections, a loose one will cause a jerky tranny. Its easy for one to slip off when you work in an area.

My SDL tranny started getting jerky and it was the small line at the pump that had came off, instant repair.

Did you mean vacuum pump instead of air pump that is new?

Yup-vacuum pump.

I think I'm gonna go through the car and change out many/all vacuum lines. It was one of the culprits I suspected, but everything seems okay

In any event, the car's parked for 2 weeks while I attend Starfest (see comments in Hot Rods if you're inclined-I'm lucky enough to be running the MB Autowerks CLK 55 KLEEMANN supercharged monster) then take some R&R with my family. I'll check back in thereafter.

Thanks guys

Michael:

Check the actuators for the EGR and air recirc valve (they both T off the main vac supply at the front of the engine -- lines go under the air filter). Both of mine were bad, caused the AC to blow up the windshield and VERY hard shifts at light throttle (OK with the pedal down). I just plugged the lines for the time being, since disconnecting the air recirc also cured the CC surge problem -- gained an extra 5 mph or so on hills, then dropped down too far and did it again.

Sorry for the late answer (summer is so short and winter so long !). You're right : your car most certainly has an overload protection switch, mine doesn't.

Here is some info I've "mined" from the W124 CD no 1 : section Engine manual -> Combustion manual ->Technical modifications -> Combustion III -> Op.No 09-200 -> "Engine overload protection not fitted on engine 602.96 with P2 control, production breakpoint 06/91 or model year 1992".

Comparaison of diagrams P07-0100-57A and P07-5011-57A respectively on pages 48 and 51 of section Engine manual -> Combustion manual ->Diesel Injection system -> 0010 Function of injection system shows that your EDS pressure sensor (item B5/1) is not directly connected to the ALDA, although it is connected to the intake manifold. Drawings on pages 82 and 83 show the location of the pressure sensor on the right side of the firewall. On page 88 the overload protection is shown on the left side.

For the 1992 model year, the folks in Stuttgart must have said "Why make it simple when we can make it complicated". There are many more components and pieces of rubber tubing on my engine compared to your's !
