Mystery Noise
I need some help here. Whenever I shift the automatic transmission in my ’81 240D from park to reverse or drive, there is a loud squeal and a little “grinding” if you will as the rear end moves with the shifting. What could it be? Brakes, shocks, axle… something?

No ideas about what's going on with my car? Come on members, I know you guys have helped solve harder problems than this.
Anyhow, I found out today that the sound only occurs when I depress the brake as I shift from park to reverse or drive. When I don't brake while shifting from park to reverse or drive, no loud squeal. What's up with that? Is it the brakes? |

Three things I can think of
1. Rear swaybar links 2. Rear Pinion bearing( bearing where main drive shaft enters into the differential. 3. Propeller shaft bearing in the middle of Main drive shaft. Last 2 looks like it. Just my 2 cents. good luck MVK

that happens to me, but it's when I push the brakes halfway down, and I have more of a popping noise, which is the differencials. I think maybe it's the brakes wore down from driving forward, and when you reverse it's going against the wearing. I'm probably wrong about the brakes but it's my guess.
