Thumbs down Chilton's car manual written incorectly????

Hello All,

The problem is i bought chilton's car manual for mercedes to install my injection pump back on the car.. the setting written in the book says my injection timing should be 15 degrees ATDC
How is that possible????
I did exactly as it is written and the car starts only when i press full throttle and it does not go over 1000 RPM (behind there is a WHITE CLoud of smoke)
Shouldnt diesels be BTDC whatever degrees???
Thank u ...

I don't know which car you have but the splined marks on the injection pump are supposed to be aligned and the IP installed with the crank at xx degrees BTDC - not after.

Yes, the timing is 15 degrees after TDC, but you have to have the Bosch sensor to set it -- it is set off the hole in the rear of the pump (there is a screwed in cover) -- there is a nipple on the arm back there that the hall effect sensor in the tool "finds" to indicate correct timing.

White smoke indicates seriously late timing.

To install this pump, you must have the locking tool and have the pump set correctly and locked before installation. You cannot install the pump without the locking tool, as it is impossible to get it in time unless it is locked while you install it in the injection timer. I believe you also have to lock the timer, too, but I'm not sure.

Installation and timing are NOT the same as the 615/617 pump!

Chilton's are often incorrect and would not recommend them to anyone. I have used them on for Honda's, Mercedes and Volvo. When compared to Haynes I'd choose a Haynes everytime. Dont trust a Chilton's.

when i tried setting it 15 ATDC the car wouldnt start at all or it will start if i press the gas to the floor and if i let go it shudders into a halt with white smoke all over

Sorry about that - I was referring to the 617 engine. Thanks for the clarification Peter.

McLaren:

How are you checking the timing? If you are using a drip tube, I'd suggest 24 degrees before TDC, as there isn't all that much difference between the actual operation of this pump and the one on the 617.

To set it properly, you need the sensor tool -- its a couple hundred bucks from Bosch or MB -- that screws into the side of the pump. The timing is 15 ATDC because that is when the arm with the point the tool "sees" swings past, not because that is when the plunger covers the filling slot in the pump sleeve. Two different ways to measure the pump position. The new way is much more accurate, by the way, and with the proper (much more expensive) tool, can be set with the engine running!

The car will start, reluctantly, if the timing is very late. Usually if it is really fast, it will hammer and sound like a sick over-the-road truck, making that "snort" when you open the throttle up. You will get smoke either way.

Peter
