Questions re: transmission fluid change?

My friend Seth and I are going to change my tranny fluid and filter...he was going to bring his jack and axle stands so we could get at it easier.
Will the transmission drain sufficiently if the front end is up? My Haynes repair manual doesn't really say anything about it.

To do a real job you should remove the pan but even if you don't you will get most of it out as long as the front is not up too much. Don't forget to drain the torque converter which holds half the oil in the tranny.

If you are changing the Tranny fluid only and not the filter, its a simple job. Its ok to raise it from front. Also to the torque converter holds about 2-3 quarts of fluid so get that one empty too. Before yoy do the job I suggest you get a new pair of drain bolt( plug) and corresponding aluminum washer for both torque converter and the tranny pan.
I had a worn out washer, and had none in spare, so even after tightening it was dripping a little. I had to next day get the above mentioned washer and a new drain plug and redo the job.

Good luck its very simple if you are just changing the fluid.

The drain is at the rear of the pan, so I would think that raising the front would help the draining.

My book says that that my tranny with converter holds 6.6 liters and if you change the fluid without draining the torque converter you only add 5.5 liters. That means that the converter hold 1.1 liters.

BUT:

When I took my pan off and changed the fluid a week or so ago, I added 5 quarts. My pan seal still leaked and I was going on vacation, so I left my car at the MB dealer. They told me that I overfilled by about two quarts, so that makes me wonder how much tranny fluid you can put in if you don't drain the converter.

Also, if you don't need to remove the pan, I wouldn't. It may not seal again. Unless you are having slipping problems and wont to look and see if there is any band material on the bottom of the pan.

I must say that the pan on my MB was the cleanest of any pan I have ever seen!

Thanks much, that's really helpful information. Just to clarify: the torque converter and the transmission share the same fluid but have to be drained separately? Also, is it possible to change the filter without removing the pan?

No, you have to remove the pan to get to the filter. The drain plug is 5mm hex, so is the plug for the torque converter. Once you have the fluid drained from the pan, remove the pan and you will need a phillips screwdriver to remove the filter. Also, when you go to fill the tranny., remember to add a couple quarts less than spec. Start the car, this will pump fluid into the converter. It should take only a couple of minutes. With that done, add the rest of the fluid. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE PAN BOLTS!!!!!!

What torque on the pan bolts to avoid overtightening them?

The torque for the pan bolts is 5 ft lbs. The pan drain plug is 10 and the torque converter is 11 ft lbs. The real critical one, again, is the pan bolts. Over tighten these and you run the risk of squishing (sp) the gasket. Also when you go to tighten them, it's best to go in a crisscross pattern. This will ensure the pan goes on straight.

and to get at the converter plug you have to get the thing to line up with the access hold at the bottom. some people keep turning the engine over until it alines but I just used a big screwdriver and levered in into place.
