I have long recognized that synthetics were superior for gas engines. I think this was easily demonstrated with my wife's departed Geo Metro. My policy was to change when it turned from blond to brunett on the dipstick, which with dino oil was always about 3000 miles. 6k for a blend. 9k for full syn. Of those, the Mobil 1 seems best to me, especially the 0W-30 that really makes a difference when the temp is well below zero. But use that in my diesel? It never occured to me. My years with the old Buick had taught me that Rotella T 10W-30 was best for winter in overall long lasting good flow when it's been sitting unplugged and the temp is -10F. Summer and those long, high-speed trips called for Delo 400 SAE30. Two years ago I changed winter oil to Rotella SB (synthetic blend, obviously) because there were commercials on the radio for it. I searched the stores, parts stores, truck stops and truck center parts counter looking for it. Everywhere I was given dire warnings that if such a thing even existed, they would certainly never use synthetic oil. Reasons ranging from it CAUSES engine damage to plots to deceive people into paying more for the same stuff. Finally I was able to get my hometown bulk plant (where I can buy nice clean winterized diesel) to order me a case. Even they thought it was stupid to spend extra. It was wonderful. It pours so nicely and startups were easier. Well I still don't see any in the stores anywhere else so I still order whole cases, but then I have not been inside a Wal-Mart in at least two years. I've been to Sam's and there are definitly no synthetic diesel choices there. I guess the answers I seek at this time are two: Are there any true lubricants formulated for diesel engines that are fully synthetic and where in the world are you finding them? Wal-Mart? Really? 30 weight? What the heck is Shell Rimula? European Rotella? http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=lubricants&FC1=&FC2=&FC3=%2Flubricants%2Ftailored%2Fshell_for_businesses%2Foils_lubricants%2Frimula%2Frimula_recommendati ons%2Frimula_recommend_0805.html&FC4=&FC5= |

First off,
Mobil 1 0W40 meets MB 229.3 spec and Mobil 1 15W50 meets the MB 229.1 spec As for 'True' diesel synthetic oils: Mobil Delvac 1 (Good luck finding it) Amsoil 15W-40 (available online or resellers) There are prolly others but these are the two biggies. Personally, I just loaded my first dose of Amsoil in the last oil change because I couldn't locate any Delvac 1 at the time. I've since located a site online that supposedly sells it. Next time around, I'm going to order the Delvac 1 if I can.

Amsoil
http://www.amsoil.com/products/heavytrucks/index.htm If you want to pay the bucks. I used it in a blend-your-own for about 30K miles and didn't have problems. Always thought some syn was better than no syn. I now have switrched to the Rotella 5W40 (pseudo) syn. JohnM 1983 240D |

I am not a petrochemist, but being a true car nut, what is dearer to the hearts of people like us than oil - hence the numerous threads on the subject that can be found in our archives?
I have read that Mobil 1 Delvac 15W40 holds particulates in suspension, and absorbs acids better than absolutely everything else, is less hydroscopic, and flows at lower temperature. (I know that the Amsoil guys will protest loudly, but hey, I am gullible and believe the things I read considering the preponderance of that opinion). I use Mobil 1 Delvac 15W40 in the Canadian Pacific Northwest with no ill effects at all. The old 250000mile diesel starts regardless of the temperature, uses about half a litre in 5000 miles, and there are no leaks that are indicated by spots on my driveway. It's great oil. I wish the rest of life's important questions were as easy to answer as "what oil should I use in my car?" |

lagnaf - Delvac 1
Somebody already showed you the link to the Amsoil site, so I thought I would throw in this one for the Delvac 1 since LightMan apparently isn't watching.
http://www.avlube.com If you'd rather buy it locally, the stuff can be hard to find. The best bet is a heavy truck maintenance depot where you would have to ask for it. I have also found a Mobil branded oil change place that will order it, but their price is much higher than avlube. I switched to Amsoil because the Delvac 1 was so hard to find, but I may switch back now that I found avlube.
