Question Rotella 5W40W synthetic

I am about to change from Dino oil to synthetic. I found Rotella Synthetic for $12.83 per gal. at Walmart.
My pride and joy is a 92' 300D 2.5 turbo with 189,000 miles on the clock.
Would appreciate hearing from others as to the wisdom of this change as well as any thoughts as to the finer points of switching to synthetic at this mileage.

Thank you,
Roscoe

Interesting. Was that a sale price or their regular price? I hadn’t noticed this particular oil before but I might consider switch to it as well.

http://www.rotella.com/rotella_t_synthetic.html

Currently I use Chevron Delo 400 and have 154k miles and use less than a quart between changes. I’d be staying with 3000 miles changes since I can’t get myself used to an extended oil change. And if there is no appreciable increase in consumption/leakage at that price I’d be willing to give it a try.

I switched to Castrol Syntec 5W50 at 160,000 miles in a 300SD and the oil consumption decreased and some small oil leaks stopped leaking.

So I think it is a good move. I change oil and filter at 10,000 intervals and still go between changes without adding oil with 200,000+ on the car.

Change the oil filter at 3000 miles on the first synthetic oil fill, especially if the engine looks dirty through the oil filler -- all that crud will wash loose and end up on the filter.

You may find that a number of minor oil leaks disappear -- my TE went from a quart every 1000 to a quart every 2000 when I changed it over. Won't stop a front cover leak on a 603 or M103, though......

I have used that oil for almost a year now. And since I replaced the air cleaner o rings and the turbo drain grommits I use almost no oil. I just fixed that stuff 2000 miles ago and no oil usage yet. I am so happy about that. I did hear that the specs for the flow characteristics for the sunnoco synthetic are not that great at low temp. that the delvac 1 is much better. Now I am sure that someone will have that data or perform a search to find out for sure. I plan on using the sunnoco until it gets cold here in chicago. And when my business gets rolling I want to switch to amsoil. I got a friend who can get it for 5 bucks a qt.

Bottom line is that the wal mart price is hard to beat for synthetic diesel oil. I have been satisfied with it so far.

good luck

I also found the synthetic Rotella at WalMart for $12.83/gal and bought every gallon on the shelf. I run it the wife's ML320 and in my E300. At about twice the price of dino oil, it's a bargain and allows us to use the FSS to signal oil changes. Since most of my E300 miles are on the highway, Ive noticed the FSS calls for service at the 14K mile point. So I split the difference and change the oil at 7500 miles with the syn Rotella. Doesn't use a drop between changes. There are purists out there who will tout Delvac 1 and I'm sure it is a great product. But its hard to find and pricey which is why I haven't used it.

I believe I remember reading that the Shell Rotella synthetic was not a true synthetic by some peoples definition. Many in the industry believe that in order to be called a full-synthetic product the oil should have a polyalphaolefin (PAO) base stock. Some companies have instead started modifying mineral oil stocks in ways they feel enable the product to be called synthetic. While there may indeed be some benefit to them over conventional oils, this certainly isn't the oil that many believe they are getting. A debate is currently raging as to what constitutes synthetic. In the meantime we'll probably see other oil companies introduce products like this that confuse the consumer. Hopefully there will be some defining labeling guidelines developed for the consumer soon so we'll know what we are getting. In the meantime, caveat emptor! There could be some fairly significant differences in the $4 per quart oil you are looking at on the shelf.

Update on Rotella T Synthetic in 5W-40 ...

My wife just called and said local Walmart had it in both quarts and gallons ... quarts were $3.33 each (marked down from $4.97) and the gallons were a bit over $18 per.

She got all the quarts there were ...

I spoke with a Walmart manager a while back and she explained they rotate their sales ... nor particularly pattern.

I asked her to call me when Mobil 1 15-50 was on sale ... you guessed it ... nothing heard.

Let's keep looking for data on Rotella T syn vs Mobil 1 ... if it is CLOSE to as good (and there is independent data to back the claims) then $3.50 vs $6 plus gets my vote!

I ran 5w40 syn last winter and was surprised to discover that it functioned the same in terms of oil consumption. Mine didn't use any more oil than normal. It helped a bunch on cold starts!

Roscoe:

You're awesome for pointing out this sale. Stopped by Walmart today and snagged a ton of it for 12.83 per gallon. Beats the 18.88 I was paying. Bought 12 gallons (ouch $) but it'll last through the winter. I like to run it in the MB's during the bitter cold.

Thanks again,

Don

Wink

I picked up 6 gallons at $12.83 each today on a “roll back” price. Not sure if that means a sale what since I’m not usually a Walmart shopper. Great buy and thanks to Roscoe for posting the heads up and not just doing a search.

Walmar should give you a cut roscoe, it looks like you sold over $300 in Synthetic Rotella because of your post!
