seat spring repair
I found a nice set of palamino Mertex front seats for my 81 SD on Ebay they were in Portland so drove up to get them. When I went to install the drivers seat I found one of the U shaped spring sections broken on the new seat. (three were broken on the old tattered seat that I took out of the car) so having two old seats for parts I cut the same U shaped non broken portion of the old seat out with my air cut off tool then overlaid it on the broken spring. I then pried four spring clamps off the spring on the back rest of the old seat and then used them to clamp the cut U shaped section on the broken spring, works great, check photo....

Good show. I have heard that they are tough to repair but you just might have found the answer. Thanks for sharing.

I have performed different repairs on mine. The repairs are going on 5+ years at this point, and they appear to be holding.
I used a combination (i.e., composite) of epoxy and utility wire(about 18 gauge). I first took the seat out. Then I would unite the broken springs and wrap them in a thin coating of epoxy (I used a "steel" epoxy that used to be available at Sears, and is now available at pep boys). Next, I would let it partially harden -- about 3-5 minutes -- then wrap it tight with the utility wire, letting the wire embed itself in the epoxy. Subsequently, I would cover the area with an additional, and thicker coating of epoxy so that the epoxy sandwiched the wire. These repairs were performed in early 1996. I have since driven over 150kmi with not a single one breaking.
