Where's my thermostat?

Which place has my thermostat? And what is the sensor in each picture for?

Your thermostat is under the housing in the lower picture, on the side of the engine. The top sesnor is, I believe, a temperature sender to the EDS (computer) system that controls the EGR & idle functions.

The lower sensor - on MY car - is a 50 degree Celcius temp switch that provides a softer shifting tranny when the car is cold. However I'm not sure if it provides the same function on your car, or if it's even the same 50C switch.

Tip: To replace the thermostat, remove that sensor in front of the housing first. It will make it A LOT easier to R&R the t-stat! Otherwise it's a real bear. The metal seal ring on the sender can be re-used multple times.

HTH,
