Now that I think about it, you know all the work that's been done on my car. I would prob sell it for $11k. I would be taking a few thousand loss but might consider it...

Looking for my first diesel

Thanks to all you guys out there that helped me with advice. I spent over 8000 rather than the 7000 which I initially figured on, but now I own a beautiful burgundy 1987 300D turbo with 135,000 miles on it. It's really fast once the turbo kicks in, everything seems to work on it, the engine is as smooth as butter, and everybody thinks it's a new car. I'm glad I resisted the temptation to look at a used Volkswagen Passat. By the way it was manufactured in 1987, so I imagine that's late in the model year which to me feels like a good thing.

A couple of questions. I feel a little softness on the front driver's side suspension (not much but I notice it.) Does the Mercedes have springs?

Also I initially thought the wooden panel (running down the center to the area where the transmission shift is) was crackled (cracked due to sun exposure) but a car detailer who looked at it says that the wood is covered with a film, and that film is what's crackled (my word). Anyone ever hear of this?

Really it's a wonderful car, reeking of quality. I had a BMW 528i years ago, but this is a better car. I love Mercedes, I love the sound of the diesel starting up in the morning, and the purr of it while driving.

Thanks,

Peter4

new used

you know what amazes me is the fact that only people who love mercedes know mercedes.most people don't have a clue about models.if it has been well kept it may be 15 years old and yet most people think it to be a new car.the little star emblem dazzels them. i love it!!!!!!

Not only the little star, but also the stellar performance and quality. I'm amazed people don't get it about diesels.

Sounds like you got yourself A good car. The cracks on the wood is common, just as cracks on the dash board. My car has several cracks on the wood, and some of the film has craked off. I believe this to be very common on older cars like this.

Peter,

Congrats on the new purchase! It sounds beautiful. I would love a burgundy W124 diesel, but I have never seen one in a 1987 vintage before. They are quite rare.

Suspension: The front suspension is coil spring with a strut. There is a rubber upper strut mount and 4 rubber bushings on the lower control arm. After 15+ years, they may require replacement, as will other rubber suspension items (the rear torque arms are almost guaranteed to be shot.) Check this out and replace what is worn. You won't be sorry. I have replaced all the front end stuff on both my 124's and plan to do the 123 this winter. I also plan to do the 124 rear subframe bushings this winter as well, then I'll be done, with all new rubber stuff between the body and the tires. Oh - your problem could also be worn shocks/struts. If so, only get dealer or Bilstein units, do NOT install KYB or Monroes etc, they simply don't last very long. *************** was running a special on dealer shocks/struts recently, you could check with them if you need to buy new ones.

Wood: There is a clear coat (polyurethane?) over the wood. The coating cracks. The wood itself fades. It is a LOT of work to attempt stripping the coating, not damaging the wood, and re-coating. It's only worth it if the wood piece cannot be bought new (really old MB stuff). For your car, either live with it, buy a new one from the dealer ($100-$200), or look for a good used one from a newer W124 (up to 1995). The newer wood has a larger opening and will require a plastic trim piece, I have a 1994 panel in my one car and it looks SO much better than the old faded/cracked item...!

Regards,
