My first "kill"

I guess you could call it the "240 Showdown." Volvo 240GL automatic vs. my Mercedes 240D Manual. I was driving down the local avenue to where lots of little races go on. I was going to pick up some groceries for my family at the supermarket located there. I pull up to the light and stop. To the left of me some kid pulls up in has Volvo 240Gl. I leisurely sat at the light, and he starts to rev his engine. I ignored him, and he contined to do it while looking at me. I revved my 67 diesel horses and nodded. Shortly the light turned green. Revved it high got it into second, revved it all the way, shifted to third and kept there as long as possible. He was pulling away as I was in second, when I got it to third it was over. My 3000 pound German engineered sled pulled away as I put it into fourth around 45 miles per hour. I am so proud. I don't like Volvos. I woudln't have wanted (nor could I probably have beaten) another car other than one of those old Volvos. Just sharing my first kill with you guys. Maybe you guys could share some of yours?

LOL!!!!!

.....way to go

Wait a minute.. a 240D beat a petrol powered 240DL volvo? Don't belive you!

P.E.Haiges 08-18-2002 02:18 PM

That Volvo must have been in pitiful condition if it couldn't beat a MB 240D. The only car I could beat with my 220D was a Chev Cavalier.

Having owned a nonn-turbo 78 Volvo 240DL sedan as my first car in highschool I have to agree, it must have been in horrible condition for you to win. But, so what, enjoy the victory none the less! Now for a volvo story to explain my opinion.........

One night, while having way to many beers (this was a long long time ago, I realize the insanity of what I'm about to tell you) I was on a back road and got stuck behind about 5 other cars trailing an individual driving well below the speed limit. As we drove, more cars stacked up behind me. We hit a short straight down hill stretch. I had the volvo well tuned, bilstiens, etc... I decide to pass across the double yellow. Well about 6ish cars behind me I notice a flashing. I look back... there's a cop bearing down on me, I look at the speedo, I'm aproaching 85mph, on the wrong side of the road.. across the double yellow.... I'm drunk.... I figure f...the hell with it, I'm screwed so he's (the cop) gonna earn this one. I pop some Iron Maiden in the tape deck and keep the pedal floored. It's on, he's in one of the boxy Crown Vic's. Well as I'm sliding around corners at near triple digit speeds (I had this car wired, used to race it in the twisties all the time) I'm losing the cop. As I realized this, I took time here and there to flip him off through the sun roof. Soon his lights were faintly flashing on the trees. Well I had to run like hell and he almost caught me before the next back road but in the end I pulled into my folks house, parked behind it down by the horses and turned off the lights. He even missed the turn onto my street as the flew by sirens blaring.

So the moral to the story is, a well taken care of old Volvo in the right hands can haul some ass. I hope you all enjoy this, I swear on everything one can swear on that this is absolute truth and really happend.

PS, despite all this, I'll still only drive a benz. That Volvo was the biggest POS I've ever owned.

Frank.

Daily kills

Well, commuting 64 miles one way each day from Middletown De to Blue Bell, PA, I developed a bloodlust for 190E, specifically 2.3l. I don't know what it is, but A) everyone here drives as if just getting on the road was life threatning, B) ANYTHING can be an excuse to slow down below speed limit (sun glare, a couple of drops of rain, forcasted snow -God help you if you can actually see a flake- an accident 1/2 mile from I-95, etc.), and c) somehow the lanes got flipped with the right being left and vice versa. The 190e divers are REALLY bad about it, usually putting at 10 miles below speed limit in the left lane (a favorite sport of 90% of PA drivers).
There is something satisfying to bear down on these putzes in a car with 1/2 hp's of what that they have, get close enough to see there eyes widen in horror, and swerve at the last minute to blast right past them (all this can be accomplished at a maximum speed of 60 mph). So, In get my "kill" of a 190E at least 2-3 times a week. And yes, it DOES make mi feel better! :D

Being brought up 10 miles from the PA border, I’ve had lots of experience with them. I moved to sunny so cal a long time ago but recently I got stuck behind a car and said to myself “He’s driving just like a gd PA driver” even though he had CA plates. When I got closer I saw he had a PA dealer emblem:eek:

Old Deis 08-19-2002 01:30 PM

Maybe the Volvo wasn't racing.

Piotr 08-20-2002 12:43 AM

Right-o, Jim. PA is the ONLY state where four cars on an empty 3-lane interstate can create a traffic jam. I'm not even going to go into the trucks pacing each other and blocking traffic for miles-it's a relatively new "sport". Being from Michigan (5 yrs in Detroit) I CAN"T STAND IT!! where do this people get their licenses-Craker Jack box?

no dought amazing driving skill! coupled with the fact that not much chance of spinning rear tires creating great cloud of white rubber smoke while Volvo blast away at breakneck speed........

I killed an isuzu rodeo 4cyl manual gasser. It was a friend, and he says "wanna race" I said "yeah right non turbo, automatic diesel..." He says "so what" So at the light, I saw the other side go red. I held the brake down and loaded the torque converter for a good 10 seconds, when the light turned green I floored it and let off the brake holding down the kickdown button. I've never had that car take off like that before. I left him in my diesel cloud. Once to the posted speed limit I stopped because he was way back there. He doesn't know how to shift... But oh well I still won!

Kids in civics try to get me to race all the time! I just look over at them and laugh. A kid in a hatch back civic w/ all his hub caps missing and one of those cheap ass generic fit all mufflers was reving his engine at me. I didn't look at him, and at the light I accelerated casually as he gunned it and sounded like my lawn mower in choke. I hit the kick down and flew past him. I don't ever start races because I know I have no chance. It's only to the pitiful that bring it on that I race! :)

Had fun eating dust of a z28 once. heh heh

WR- the ONLY way to prevent my rear tires from spinning was to replace my Futura tire with a super performance Yokohana (Avid T4, no less!!!). Still, I have dificulties controlling the car (may have something to do with the fact I have an inch freeplay on my steering wheel though....) at these tremendous forces (77hp is not a joke!!) and speeds (I hit 65 mph on occasion) :p

As to my driving skills, well, can you believe I can actually maintain (safely) speeds approaching speed limit - -IN A DRIZZLE?? Yes, due to my superdriver capabilities i can drive 55 mph on a (gasp) wet asphalt AND move forward in a snow flurry. These skills are almost unheard of in the Philadelphia area!!!

190D22 08-20-2002 12:27 PM

haha

Hey Piotr, I think I'm set on the yoko Avid Touring tires. Tire rack has 'em for 41 bucks a piece and their ratings are higher than the Avid T4. I am shooting for handling and noise/comfort here.

william rogers 08-20-2002 08:29 PM

Just put Avid Touring on my 500 SE I like them so far.......

If you think the Mercedes is slow try my 50 horse chevette. If you see me on the street don't race it's embarrassing enough already.:(
